Question about Maytag MEW6627D Electric Double Oven

Steam from oven scaled cabinet above oven

When I cooked my Thanksgiving turkey, I used convect bake 325, so much steam came out of the oven while the turkey was cooking that it scaleded the cabinet (totally removed the finish) on the cabinet door above the oven. All the steam came out of a small vent on the right top side of the oven. I have cooked turkeys before (I have had this oven for 2 years 2 months) and this has never happened before. Luckily, I am putting new cabinets in as we speak but I am terrified of using the oven again. Help! I have asked the kitchen salesman and the contractors and no one has ever seen this happen before. What could it be? I don't want to get a new oven but I can not afford to have this happen with the new cabinets. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

well they can be pretty close because there alot of insulaion in the side and back of the oven. about a 1/2'' is okay really i've been in houses where it's touching the cabinets

SOURCE: Stuck oven light bulb

I use 2 sided tape to get a grip on the bulb. If it is really stuck and you end up breaking it, don't worry as it will be easier to remove the rest of the bulb with a pair of needle nose pliers.

What is the best setting for my viking on a 14 pound turkey, bake or do i use the convection broil?


Use the regular bake setting.... run the oven at 350.... the 14 lb. bird will take about 4-5 hours.....convection moves air and can tend to dry out the bird...

Buy an oven thermometer to check if the temperature you set the oven at is accurate. You may have a faulty thermostat, but if the temp is only off by a little, you can calibrate the temp setting on the oven by as much as + or - 25 degrees. If you have an LCD screen, then most likely you can adjust it right on there. If not, then the backside of the oven knob can be adjusted + or -. by moving a set screw and turning as needed. Your owner's manual will have a more detailed explanation on this procedure. Douglas

How best to cook turkey. What setting?

step 1
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
  • Step 2 Remove turkey from its wrapping and remove neck and giblets from inside the cavity. Set aside to make gravy later (see Related eHows).
  • Step 3 Rinse turkey inside and out with cold water. Pat dry with paper towels.
  • Step 4 Put oven rack on lowest level of oven.
  • Step 5 Place turkey, breast side up, on a roasting rack in a roasting pan.
  • Step 6roast1s.jpg Rub the outside of the turkey with olive oil.
  • Step 7roast2s.jpg Salt and pepper the turkey's body and cavity.
  • Step 8roast3s.jpg Roast turkey about 3 hours, or until a meat thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the thigh registers 175 to 180 degrees F.

    • In general, a turkey should be roasted 10 to 12 minutes per pound if it is not stuffed and 12 to 15 minutes per pound if it is stuffed.
    • In general, you shouldn't cover a roasting turkey (or any roasting meat); you want the skin to get a nice, deep brown all over, and you don't want it to steam in its own juices. However, if the turkey begins to brown too quickly, well before it's likely to be done, you can cover the brown parts loosely with aluminum foil. (This is likely to happen with larger birds.) Try to cover as little of the turkey as possible so you don't create steam.

    Baking with digital oven

    First let me address the temp ... Buy a meat thermometer and test it against the temp set in the oven.  Though that isn't the most accurate, it should prove whether or not it is way way off.
    Second.. convection baking takes considerably less time.... 
    Third... elevation plays a key factor on baking but not so much on cooking meat.  Baking above 2500ft elevation takes 20% longer and above.

    Amana Convection oven not controlling temp

    I have just checked the baking guide in the manual and have found that it may not be us after all. (Maybe this is why they telll us to read the whole manual. Well, I never have) According to the cooking time for Baking, the range is very extensive. For example, an angel cake at 350 could take from 28-50 minutes, buscuits at 375-400 could take 8-16 minutes, layer cakes at 350-375 could take 25-40 minutes, pound cakes at 325-350 could take 45-70 minutes and fresh pies at 400-450 could take 35-60 minutes. Basically, the baking directions on the box means absolutely nothing to use Amana oven owners. We have no choice but to cook our food or baked goods until they are cooked, whenever that may be. :) Linda
