Check Engine light just came on steady

The "gas cap light" actually does not mean the gas cap is loose or defective.It is telling you there is a leak in the fuel system somewhere,usually a vapor line or stuck or defective valve.Not very often is it the gas cap that causes the light to come on.Time for a scan and a smoke test to fine the leak.

The emission light comes on when the computer detects a leak or malfunctioning part in the system. It can come on due to a loose gas cap to a disconnected hose. There a lot of things that make this light come on. IS the check engine light on/flashing? If so, you may have a misfire causing the shake. If the engine light is on, have the codes scanned to isolate the problem.

Hello Shena: The flashing check engine light means to get your attention as the engine is misfiring as well as having some sort of "fault" The only reason that light comes on at all is that your vehicle is exceeding federal tailpipe emissions by a factor of 1 and a half.
The knocking and shaking is most likely caused by the misfire.
Have it analyzed by a good shop and best case scenario is there is a malfunctioning spark plug, spark plug wire or ignition coil. Get it done right away, misfires can damage the catylitic convertor (thus the flashing instead of steady light)
It would help to know the VIN of the car so mechanics can drill in on the specific model of your vehicle.

Check to see that your battery is secured. See if you can wiggle it. Make sure all battery terminal connections are tight, and all ground wires.

run the fault codes
indicates a loose ground wire , probably the battery terminal loose or dirty

Get a good alternator not a cheap one.

You need to completey clear your codes first if the problem continues it could be a defective clockspring.

f the light is on steady it is prob one of the emission sysytem's like 02 sensor.. as long as light is not blinking ok to drive till fixed..

Clear light by: taking batt cable off for about 3 min and prees your foot on break while cable is off.. then put cable back on.. light will go off for a while but as soon as it sees the problem again it will come on

Hi i have only had this problem once after boost.
I solved it by disconnection the battery over nite to reset the ECU give it a try,
