Question about Dell Inspiron E1705 Notebook

1 Answer

Sound Card I think I deleted my sound card / information. I have a Dell Inspiron e1705. I was deleting unwanted programs to free up space, (and I emptied the recycling bin too before I realized what I have done) now my computer won't make a sound. I went to the start button, clicked on "run", typed in "dxdiag" and clicked on the "sound" tab and it states there is not a "sound card" found. Now WHAT???

If your Dell does not have a built-in SD card reader then you can purchase a USB SD (multi memory card) reader. Then you can copy/load photos from memory card into your computer.

5 ways to speed up your PC

By following a few simple guidelines, you can maintain your computer and keep it running smoothly. This article discusses how to use the tools available in Windows 7, Vista, and http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx#">XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to more efficiently maintain your computer and safeguard your privacy when you're online.

1. Free up disk space

The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk to improve the performance of your computer. The tool identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.

Use Disk Cleanup to:

  • Remove temporary Internet files.

  • Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).

  • Empty the Recycle Bin.

  • Remove Windows temporary files such as error reports.

  • Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.

  • Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

  • Remove unused restore points and shadow copies from System Restore.

Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.

To use Disk Cleanup

Window 7 users

  1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.

  2. When Disk Cleanup has calculated how much space you can free, in the Disk Cleanup for dialog box, scroll through the content of the Files to delete list.

I think I accidentally deleted the mic software because there's no sound. how can I re-istall it back? comp is Dell Latitude D600

We need more information to help you.

What operating system are you running?

What exactly did you delete when you said you "think" you deleted the software"?

Are you saying you deleted the sound card device driver software using the Windows device manager or did you remove some other audio application?

I will try and help anyway with minimal information so far.

If you're running windows XP (vista is similar) I would check if the driver software for the sound card is still intact. The microphone itself has no "software" exactly. It's just connected to the Internal sound card and the sound card has a driver program that allows it to communicate with the operating system, and thus it can provide recording or other microphone functions.

1. Check if the sound card device driver is still there.
Right click on "My Computer", Select "Manage" and go to the "device manager". Look for an entry in the section most likely called "Sound , video and game controllers". If the drive software is missing there will be an entry there listing a sound device with a yellow exclamation mark next to it. It may also end up in some other generic section of that same page since Windows may not know how to categorize the device if the driver is missing.

If the sound card is OK it will be listed there and if you look at the details it would say no problem is detected.

2. Make sure the laptop speakers are not muted or turned down.

3. Make sure the mic itself is not muted also or turned down.
You can view those controls by double-clicking the speaker icon down near the clock in the lower right corner, or by going to in the control panel > sound-audio devices.

4. Check the mixer levels for both play and record, you can only view one at a time.
That means there is a mixer for playback and another one for recording. If your device driver is missing you have to fix that first.

Even if you remove the "driver" the files are still on the computer unless you proactively went and found the driver files (not likely) and removed them. For example, if you go to the control panel and delete the sound card entry, it will come back when you reboot because the driver files are still on the system.

You could go get the latest sound card driver from Dell.com.
Go to the Dell home computers > Support page, Drivers, Laptop > Lattitude, etc and put in your model number of your laptop or the service tag number from the bottom of the laptop. I won't cover the exact sequence since you should be able to find it in about 2 minutes.

This direct link might work (take out spaces if they show up)
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D600&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

Dell drivers are a single file that is self extracting after you download it, and then go find it and run it. It will install the appropriate driver files when you double-click on the installer.

It appears the Dell D600 has a Sigmatel sound card by default..

We can provide a shorter and more accurate solution if you provide more details as indicated earlier.

Check your sound setting - volume out - if mic on turn it off - (gets turned on for testing).
Go to sound settings in Control Panel and check sound card setting for correct sound card output.
ALSO - check that MIC is plugged into MIC and NOT Speaker Out - common error.

Deleted sound

You need to be more specific on ( tried everything ). You cant just DELETE the sound. By delete the sound you mean no sound works at all?

Im asuming the user deleted the drivers and you need to go to www.support.dell.com and enter the model number in help and support and get the drivers. Re-install them and you should be fine.

Let me know what the situation is in more detail of what all you have done and I wil try and help you out.

Slow starting Dell Inspiron 2650

The first thing I would look at is hard drive free space. Almost universally, critically slow systems have a hard drive with no free space. What most people don't seem to understand is that Windows requires a minimum of 10% of the hard drive to be free space to allow the operating system room for swap files and other temporary files needed to run the OS efficiently. This can be made worst by the fact that Windows only reports the size of a file on the hard drive, not the amount of space actually allotted to the file (This has to do with cluster size and the fact that only one file is written to any part of a cluster and in this case it is small files that waste a lot of space)

Things you can do.

1. Run disk cleanup, and get rid all temporary files.
2. If you use an email client like Outlook/Outlook express, delete unwanted emails, then empty the deleted items folder.
3. Open Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, delete all cookies and temporaty internet files.
4. Go to add/remove programs in control panel, uninstall any programs or applications you do not use.
5. If you have a large amount of pictures or music files on the system, burn them to CDs or DVDs and free up that space.
6. Go to System Properties, Advanced Tab, performance section, settings button, select Adjust for Best Performance, Click Apply, Click Advanced TAB, Virtual Memory, Change Button, Select System Managed Size, Click Apply close then reboot.
7. Go to MY Computer, right click C:, Click Properties, Tools Tab, Defragment the Hard Drive
8. Adjust power management to Maximum perofrmance.
