Try taking a soft cloth and gently wiping the lense.

If that doesn't work, you may have to do a reset.
scroll all the way to the left in your menu,
scroll down to "system Settings"
click x
select, "restore default settings"
click x

If after that it still won't work and you've had it less than a year. You'll have to send it in to Sony.
Go to and click on "How to obtain Service"
toward the end of the last line in the 3rd paragraph from the bottom.

If it has been more than a year, you'll have to pay to get it fixed either through Sony or somewhere else, or just buy a new one.

Let me know if any of this helps.

Dude, how is that not at least helpful? Thanks for Trying? If none of that fixes it, it is broken and you have to get it repaired.

This is, unfortunately, a pretty common problem with some PS3 models. it's almost always a hardware issue where the lazer lens inside the PSP fails or is otherwise no longer able to read game discs.

The only real fix for most people is to send it in to Sony for replacement; but that's only good if it's still under warranty (they'll want a copy of the original receipt).

Otherwise, your only choices are to get a new PSP or only play games stored on the memory card.

Ello. My PSP won't read UMDs. The loading

Most likely the laser is weak. It has been awhile since I have changed a laser in a psp. But first off you should clean the laser with a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol and dry it with the other end of the q-tip. It doesn't take much for them to not be able to read a disc. If it still doesn't work you will need to replace the laser if you aren't that great at working on electronics or very small things you need to find someone to do it for you.

Btw, I’m available to help over the phone in case u need at

After I run ChicHENR2 and GEN C (so it will have GEN C FULL as CFW) few minutes it will start lagging. can someone help me :(

Hi, I have a psp same as yours 5.03 gen-c.It requires chickhen. If it hangs in the photo folder when you use chickhen, just try and try until it works. But if an hour it does not work.Choose settings in the home menu of the psp in the system settings then restore default settings then try again the chickhen. After that run the cfw enabler in the game menu.It usually restart your psp then try pushing the button select if a menu appears then it is on 5.03 gen-c. Then you will be able to play games.

When I insert a new UMD i get the game could not be started. 80020148. The UMD is recognised and the thumbnail appears on the menu, but the game will not start. Please help.

Solution: 1) You must first backup ur data on your memory stick to your PC. Mainly the saved games data. ( directory is PSP\SAVEDATA) 2) Format the memory stick using the PSP format tool in system settings...not your PC. 3) In System Setting UNCHECK or UNSELECT "UMD Cache" this must be off!!!! 4) Connect your psp via USB cable 5) Copy your game saves / data back to your psp remember >> PSP\SAVEDATA . 6) Do a hard reboot of your psp ie hold the power switch for 3 seconds and it will reboot. 7) Your UMD games should now work with no probs.

WHen I turn on my PSP I get a yellow screen/Menu. It has Settings, Camera, Music, Video etc. How do I exit this to play a game?

This is the XMB its the main menu of the system. Games will be located under the Controller Icon. To play games insert a UMD, or if a game is downloaded and saved on the memory card, go through the icons under Controller icon. A disk icon will appear and show a preview screen to the game, press X to start the game.

PSP Game error - the game could not be started - 80020148. PSP firmware is 4.01 M33-2

  1. go to ur M33 Recovery Menu.(it can be access by totally turning of your psp-holding the power button up...and then turn it on again but hold the R button.. It should appear as it turns on..)
  2. go to the configuration and press Xbutton..
  3. browse and go to UMD Mode and
  4. check if it set to <currently: M33 Driver -NO UMD>if not, just press x until it appears...
after that exit in that should play after that setting..i have encountered 8 psp's with that kind of problem...

trust me you dont want to go to a service center unless you can have a solutions on the internet...coz it will cost you 500-700php

I know there are games in my psp but the psp is not showing them

you have to save the games in your PSP/GAME Folder. The PBP Files should have its own folder under the GAME Folder and the games should appear when you click on it in the XMB Game Menu.
