Question about Tappan Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

Heating elements won't work

I just bought a Tappan stove. Hooked it up, the clock works but the burners won't work or the oven won't work. What is going on? I can't figure it out

Thank you. It was connected to a 20 amp breaker instead of a 40 amp breaker. Thanks for your help.

If this is an electric range, double check your voltage at the receptacle. It should read 220-240VAC. It sounds like you could be missing one leg of the 220 service. This means, you may only have 110-120VAC coming from your receptacle. The clock will still work because it only uses 110-120 VAC to operate. The burners, however, require the full 220 service to operate. The following link explains how the receptacle should be wired and the voltage requirements:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r793520-3_prong_4_prong_power_cord_conversion

I know the link is for converting power cords, but it gives the information of how the receptacles are wired and the color codes for the wiring. The two "HOT" leads at the receptacle are the larger slots. A reading across these two slots (RED and BLACK wires) should read your source voltage.

I hope this may help you. If your range is NOT electric, please post back and let me know, so I can assist you further.

What's wrong and how do I fix it?

The circuit breaker outside in the power panel for the stove has a bad breaker. It will be two breakers with their handles joined together by a pin so if one tripe it takes the other so 220 V is no longer present. When one, but not the other trips you only have 110 V. That's why the lights and clock still work but no heating elements.

Why won't my oven and broiler work after replacing the bake element in my Tappan tef361esd?

There are usually no fuses in the stove. Sometimes there is a thermal fuse but it is usually not tripped from a burned out element. the problem may be a burned contact in the oven control or thermostat or a burned wire. Sometimes the contact will burn when the elements burn out.

You can test the element by unplugging the machine, removing the back wall to gain access to the bake element at the bottm, and using a volt meter check it for continuity. There is also a thermal cutoff that you want to check while behind the machine.

My stove does not work

Sounds like you have a voltage problem. try slamming your double 40 amp house breaker on and off 2 times. then try your stove out and see if that worked:)

My Tappan stove oven bottom heating element is not working. How do I fix it?

The element is probably bad. Remove element after unplugging stove and check with ohm meter. If you do not have one take element with you to parts store and they will check for you. Good luck. Hope this helps.

You need to check the connection at the back of the unit that hooks to the house power. Turn off breakers or pull fuses before checking. It sounds like you only have half of the voltage you need. One of the wire connectors may be burnt or you may have a problem with the house wiring.
