Re: Add-on

If the comp comp doesnt go past compaq logo or if it beeps, pls reseat the all the RAM cards and any PCI video cards and the CMOS battery and check.
Pls remove all the RAM cards and then turn on the comp. If it doesnt beep, then it could be an issue with the motherboard.
If it beeps then try with one RAM at a time.

Hope this helps.

Re: Add-on

It is not the power supply or the cables! It is a defect Gateway has in the motherboard. Called support to find this out.

To get around this problem, unplug the power supply cord at the tower, then hold down the start button for 20 seconds, then replace the cord at the tower. Then turn it on as usual. This worked for me! Problem is u have to do this each time.

We discovered that by leaving our Sims Online game running when we are done with the comp, it doesnt go into standby mode. So we just leave comp on with game running, lol. Sheesh. Gateway suks. Gonna get a new comp..... Hopes this helps!

Re: Add-on

The first beep could be a beep code, letting you know that something is wrong. or, it could be the signal that all is well and that the computer has found everything and is ready to boot. does it usually beep when you start it up or just this one time?

Re: Add-on

Hi im Joan Hall.I have a suggestion. Please check your IDE Cables. When u reboot your computer it should say detecting IDE Cables. If it beeps that usally means that your computer has an error.See if its not the IDE Cables because they will cause your computer to beep and not boot up right.

Beeps when is turning on

You need to be more specific... How many beeps? Did you add any new hardware? Were you doing anything inside the case? Does it boot up at all? Are there any messages on the screen?

My compaq wont boot past the compaq logo all it does just sit their and i try to hit esc. f1 or f10 it still does nothing it used to boot up every 2 or 3 days after it off a while and now i change the cmos...

several people have reported the same issue, the only person I can see who solved it was to do a complete windows xp installbut I am not sure how he achieved this if the machine wont post. First thing I would check is how secure any add on cards or RAM sticks are, disconnect your machine from the mains, take the side off, touch the casing to discharge any static you may have in your body, then go around the mainboard, reseating each part. Just take the part out and put it back in again, It could be that something has been knocked and isnt connecting properly.

I have compaq 530 tower which when I switch on gives 5 short beeps, I have checked the connections as advised and they seem ok, looking on net it says 5 short beeps could be prob with CPU, what is CPU.

5 Short Beeps
Your motherboard is complaining. Try re-seating the memory and rebooting. If that doesn't help, you should consider another motherboard. You could probably get away with just replacing the CPU, but that's not too cost-effective. Its just time to upgrade!

One long beep usually means a memory or RAM error..
Try removing the ram sticks and then simply replacing them back into the slots..
The contacts in the RAM slots are self cleaning to taking the sticks out and putting them straight back is usually enough to correct this issue..
Just make sure you touch part of the metal chassis of the tower BEFORE you touch anything else.
This will discharge any static charge you may have on your body..

When I start-up my Compaq Presario S4200NX - I get the Compaq logo and a continuous beep and it doesn't go any further. I've read some posts and its pointing to the memory card being bad. Is this the case?

It is possible that the memory sticks(RAM) are busted or cannot be read anymore. If you have multiple memory sticks, try isolating the damaged memory stick by using 1 memory stick at a time and try starting your computer up. Once you have found the busted one, try replacing it with a new one.

Hope this helps!

Boot up problems

If it won't go past the splash screen, and you have replaced the CPU, I agree that it is probably the motherboard.
One other test you can do is, remove the memory chips, and any cards that are plugged it, and see if it beeps on start up.
If it does, count the beeps. If it doesn't it is the motherboard.
If you get beeps, plug the memory back in, and try again. Listen for beeps. Let us know what you find.

And I don't know if Compaq's do this (Dells do) when you turn it on, do the fans spin up normally? Or does it sound like a small jet? Speaking of which, do you see the fans spin up at all?
