My IBM T43 ThinkPad's screen has suddenly dulled dramatically. I normally use my laptop plugged into an external monitor, but when I disconnected it to use the lap to solo, the screen was so dull it was barely visable. I shut down and restarted a couple of times, but still nothing. When plugged into my external monitor again, I can see the screen on the monitor, but still nothing on my laptop screen. My laptop is plugged into power - not battery operated. I went into the bios setup and the brightness of my screen was set to normal. I changed it to high, but it still isn't making a difference. Any suggestions?
Encountered some problem. Plugged latop into an external monitor, changed the resolution... can now see on both screens. Suspect graphics, soldier, or cable fault. Encountered some problem. Look a the screen real close, if you see a faint dark version of the image, this could be a backlight issue, otherwise a screen cable or a logic board issue. Backlight repairs are somewhat difficult. As much as I would like to be able to tell you a quickfix that will solve backlight the problem, it's a pretty arduous repair that requires 1-2 hours for a trained person. It's feasible to do it yourself if you're tech savy, but you'll most likely have to google for guides that show you exactly how to replace the backlight step by step. Check on how to take the screen apart and make sure inverter is still connected properly. If so, you have a backlight issue. I work for Computer Repair NYC and i have to fix this problem a lot, it's so easy to break the lightbulb in the process.

Back up your most important data
to an external storage device in case anything goes wrong while
changing the BIOS settings. Remove any disc that is currently inserted
in the IBM Thinkpad X41's disc drive. 2-Shut off the Thinkpad X41
laptop. Turn the laptop back on and wait for the "To interrupt normal
startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message to appear on the
screen. 3-Tap the blue Access IBM button
at the top of the keyboard. Click the "Access BIOS" button when the
"Rescue and Recovery" menu appears. 4-Click "Yes" and wait for the BIOS to load. Type in the current BIOS password for the IBM X41 and press Enter.5-Navigate over to the IBM's
"Security" heading by tapping the right arrow key twice. Scroll down to
the "Supervisor Password" listing and press "F5."6-Type the IBM's current BIOS
password and hit Enter. Leave the next field blank if you want to
completely remove the BIOS password, or instead type in a new password
to replace the old one. Press Enter.7-Press "Escape" and then highlight "Restart" and press F5. Navigate to "Save changes and Restart" and press Enter.

It really does sound like a hardware problem, perhaps a motherboard/processor/memory issue. If there is no beeping but just humming that is just the fan and drives kicking up.
I would recommend you take it into a repair shop and have them diagnose the issue.
When you connect a data projector or external monitor to the external video port on the laptop, power up the data projector or external monitor first then the laptop. The video info will automatically divert to the data projector/external monitor automatically.
If you have already had powered up the laptop first, most laptops will allow you to toggle between the LCD screen and the external video port by pressing the Fn key plus one of the Function keys, this key will have a screen/laptop symbol.
The backlight is normall part of the LCD panel assembly and is not normally changeable on its own (sadly) however here is a link to one being solf on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/LCD-CCFL-Backlight-Lamp-for-IBM-lenovo-ThinkPad-X60-X61_W0QQitemZ250464679317QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090715?IMSfp=TL090715205001r13604
and here is a link to the X61 LCD dissassembly http://www.insidemylaptop.com/replace-broken-lcd-screen-lenovo-x60s-laptop/
After removing the LCD you will gently have to prise it apart to reveal the backlight assy. Hope this goes will for you.
