Question about Sony VAIO PCV-W500GN1 PC Desktop

Sony Vaio PCV-W500GN1 shuts down moments after startup

When the machine starts up, it shuts itself off. I does not log off, it just goes black. It will not startup again until it gets unplugged and plugged back in. It will sometimes shut down before Windows even starts up. I replaced the cord thinking it might be that simple, but it keeps shutting down. My first thought is that it is a power supply problem. I have noticed on this site that this seems to be a common problem for this machine. Any help?

    Hi Patrick,

You might want to try a couple of troubleshooting steps first.

Does the laptop perform this way when plugged into the mains. (I assume yes)
Does the laptop perform this way when unplugged.
Does the laptop get 'further into loading' when plugged into the mains.

Remove the battery from the laptop. Leave the laptop turned off for 15 minutes. Plug the laptop into the mains, BUT leave the battery out. Does the laptop still turn off ?

It may be that you have a faulty battery (it's not uncommon) and you may have to get a replacement. In which case if the laptop is under warranty, I would then suggest phoning up Sony technical support.

    I hope this helps!
    David

Computer just turnoff suddenly

Could be one of two most common problems?
#1
Have you ever replaced the CPU Cooler (Heatsink/fan)?
CPU Cooler fan may be working, Heatsink dirty.
CPU is over-heating = mainboard turns off
Replace CPU Cooler
#2
Power Supply fan not working causing partial failure on 5volt or 12volt side.
Replace Power Supply

There are more causes but these are most common for short-time boot problems.
Another could be hard-drive, but that wouldn't shut system down like first two would.

If you have replaced HDD of your machine, then there is no otherway to get your things back rather than installing them. If you have CDs from Sony, then you are safe.

Problem with Sony Vaio pcv-rx860 (screen goes black at startup)

I would suggest first to try to take one stick of memory out and try to boot up the pc. Sometimes, one or both of the memory sticks can go bad or the memory slot on the motherboard itself can go bad. If that is not the case I would then remove all of the usb connected to the computer and last i would test the power supply.

Sony Vaio PCV-W500GN1 Shutting down

When was the last time you cleaned your computer? Overheating from dust accumulation can cause this kind of problem.

Check to make sure no dust has accumulated in the vents. You may need to carefully open up your computer, and use a can of air to clean out dust on the components. Be aware static electricity can destroy pats of your computer. Make sure you ground yourself by touching a piece of metal before opening the computer case. You don't need to touch anything in there, however. Just carefully use the canned air to clean things out.

Good luck.
