Question about Dishwashers

New dishwasher leaving powder residue on dishes.

Bought a new dishwasher and found it leaves a white powdery film on my dishes. Bought brand new Cascade complete liquid detergent, using amount for hard water, rinse aid is full, but still having a white powder residue. My old dishwasher did not do this. The dishes seem clean, but need to be wiped off the remove powder residue. This is a new Kenmore elite 13869 dishwasher. I have well water, good pressure. Any suggestions? I have the same problem with my 5 year old Maytag dishwasher. The inside is coated with a white powder including the coils and the glasses and dishes are filmy white and the flatware is streaked. I live in Southern California and have had no problem with other dishwashers in the past but this is getting really bad.

I have the same problem - new LG dishwasher, white powder residue on rinse cycle. I think it is related to the rinse aid, which in this case is Jet Dry. Residue seemed to reduce when I turned down the dishwasher's rinse aid setting from 3 to 1. Still did not go away though.

I have the exact same problem. Brand new Kenmore Elite dishwasher does not clean dishes and they come out looking worse than when they went in. My 13 year old Whirlpool did a much better job. So sorry I got a new dishwasher.

I have the same problem with my 5-year-old dishwasher, just for the past year. I normally do not use a rinse aid. I tried one and it did not seem to make any difference. Dishes need to be washed again when they come out of the washer! It's very frustrating and getting worse. I may start skipping it and just handwashing.

Quit using the new Cascade. The formula change is what is causing the problem. No research from Cascade before releasing the product

I just began having the problem with the white powdery film on my silverware when the dishwasher cycle is complete - in fact about 2 weeks ago. This has never happened before with any dishwasher I have had. I have been using this dishwasher for about 3 years.
My dishes and silverware are pre rinsed or soaked so that they are looking cleaner going into the dishwasher than they do coming out lately.
I have liked the Cascade dishwashing detergent best. I bought a new box - ABOUT 2 WEEKS AGO! Is it possible the company has changed the formula - and that is what is causing the residue?
I ran the dishwasher today when it was empty with only a cup of vinegar. I plan to buy another detergent and try that. I do use Jet Dry.
I will notify Cascade of the problem - and give them the UPC code from the box that I have been using.
If enough of us notify the company that makes the detergent we are using - maybe they can figure out what is going on.

I contacted the company that makes Cascade after I had the problem. They said to be sure to use 'Cascade Complete' rather than the plain Cascade. Yes - the problem IS because of the removal of the phosphates. When phosphates were in the products they cleaned fine. Take the phosphates out - and the white powdery film appears!

The other solution for me was to use the Lemi Shine product.

There are several types of Lemi Shine. One is added to the detergent. Another is detergent. One goes in the rinse dispenser.

I most frequently use the granular product that is added to the detergent. It works well.

I, too, would prefer to have the phosphates in the detergent -

rather than the film on clean dishes!

The problem IS because the companies removed the phosphates from the dish washing detergent to make them more "environmentally friendly" ! The product Lemi-Shine which is added to the dispenser alleviates the problem !

The Cascade company told me to use "the complete" formula and that should help as well. I don't have so much problem doing these two things. I do wish we could have some choice as to whether we would prefer having phosphates with sparkling clean dishes.....or be forced into living without phosphates!

After I made my previous post I called the company for Cascade. They said they had removed the phosphates to protect the environment. They said at the time to use the product with

"Complete" in the title. That helped. I, also, use the LemiShine additive that is added along with the detergent. I now buy LemiShine rinse agent as well! Maybe LemiShine should make a dishwasher product for cleaning dishes, too! I don't like the result of phosphates being removed. If I buy store brands of dishwasher detergent these days I have the film. Previously I could be quite happy with those store brand dishwasher cleaners.

The film is not a dishwasher issue but rather the cleaning product issue of having the phosphates removed.

It may simply be the new phosphate free dishwashing detergent. Check your box of detergent to see if it is now phosphate free. I had the same problems - white film, food particles - with no changes in my dishwashing habits. Turned out to be the new restrictions on phosphates in the detergent. I found a product at my local VONS grocery store called "Lemi Shine". It is stocked by the dishwasher detergent. It's crystals that you add along with your detergent. It works great. Also might be sold at Walmart and Ralphs.

I was told by several people that Cascase removed a phosphate per EPA. Of course, we aren't informed by TV news, etc. I have an old box of Cascade and a new box and will check the labels. The old box was fine. It's not your dishwashers or Jet Dry or similar spot removing aid, probably a surfactant. I'm taking the new Cascade back to the store. These soaps are not cheap. It also etches my pottery dishes, removing the lines! These are 30 years old and never etched before! I'm livid! My stainless steel dinner ware is all filmy with white powdery stuff that I have to had wash to remove! With dishwashers rinsing so many times, how can any phosphate be left? I'm tired of all this government running our lives. I'll stay tuned to see what you all have added. Thanks for these posts. Very helpful. I thought it was my new dishwasher, water, pressure (volume) or other doing this. I recently moved from Colorado (great water) to Indiana (super hard water).

I have the same problem about a year now. My machine is about 12 years old. What the heck is going on? I have city water. Could it be what the water dept. is adding to the water and they are not telling us?!?!?

I have the same problem. This just started happening recently with an old dishwasher that didn't do it before. The only thing that might be related is that I started using a new kind of detergent a month ago.

New dishwasher leaving powder residue on dishes.

the problem is hard water and there is a new product out called the dishwasher filtration system. it actually filters the water going into your dishwasher and leaves your dishes spot free. after the first load i was amazed that the white film was gone and my dishes were sparkling. you can get it at www.dishwasherfilter.com.
