There are numerous sites that have memory advisors that will tell you exactly what kind and how much memory your system can accommodate. As previously requested, you will have to have the model number available as a minimum.
You can retrieve just about everything you will ever need to know about your system's configuration with an excellent free utility named Belarc Advisor you can find here:

I bought an AC333X64/1024/16C memory card and my computer is able to recognize it but the computer runs very slow. Is this the right card? Thanks Steve

If this is an upgrade or an addition to the RAM slot, you better be sure of the RAM(Memory module) already installed on your pc. Take the already installed RAM and look for it's speed(mostly printed on the either side) i.e, 600 MHZ, 800 MHZ and see if it matches with the one you bought with respect to its speed. If you are not pretty sure, google the make and model and seek for info.

Possible Reasons for system running slow:

> Installed a RAM which is incompatible with the curretly allocated one.

> RAM speed conflict. Old RAM : 600MHZ, NEW RAM : 800 MHZ

> If neither of these could solve your issue and you have installed RAM with the same speed config., it can be related to your temp files and folders. Do a Disk Defrag or Disk cleanup to speed up the PC.

I guess you might be facing an issue with incorrect RAM installation. Please check back with your seller.

George

What is the max ram speed my pc can take

According to some research, your desktop has 4 RAM slots available. The total maximum RAM your desktop can hold is 2GB (2048MB). Furthermore, each slot can hold a maximum of 1GB (1024) but cannot exceed the 2GB total.
This means you can theoretically install 2 x 1GB RAM DIMMS in 2 RAM slots or 4 x 512MB RAM DIMMS. Both will meet the desktops 2GB limitation.
The RAM specifications for your desktop are as follows:
RAM Limit: 2GB (2048MB) RAM Slot Type: SO-DIMM RAM Type: DDR1 (not DDR2 or DDR3) RAM Speed: PC3200/DDR400 ECC Type: Non-ECC
TIP: The RAM is DDR which means that while you can install them as singles (single-channel mode), the system will see a speed benefit from installing them as matched pairs (dual-channel mode).

Hp Compaq dx2200 MT RAM Problems

Firstly, you have to know that you can upgrade RAM as Double or Half of your pre-installed RAM. For example, like your pre-installed RAM is 256 MB, you can only upgrade RAM of capacity 128 MB or 512 MB. Secondly, check your previous installed RAM's speed that is shown in Ghz. You can only upgrade RAM to its similar speed, otherwise you get slow performance of PC.

Trying to upgrade RAM - won't boot after new RAM installed

Install the RAM on memory slot and Switch on your system and go to BIOS settings. There you can check whether your RAM is working properly or not. If it shows no memory installed then the RAM Chip may be damaged.
