The felt is attached to the front bulkhead to your dryer. in some cases, the dryer drum itself runs on that felt. other times, it is sitting just above the drum. if your drum actually rides on the felt, you will need to get it fixed because the glides will get worn and the drum will start to scrape on the front bulkhead. if you open the door and take out the 4 screws ( 2 on either side ) then you will be able to take off the front panel. once that is off, there is a 3/8 nut screw on either side ( on the top ) that hold the lid in place. remove those 2 screws and you can lift the top of the dryer. this will give you a better view of your dryer and the extent of the issue. unplug the dryer, pull out from the wall 6 inches, remove the screws at the lint filter, use putty knife to pop the clips at the seam between the top and front(one on left front and one on right front and an inch or two in) , remove the 1/4 inch hex head screw one on left , one on right, tip front forward, unplug the door switch, remember where the wires went, lift the front panel off. Remove belt by reaching under drum and grasp the idler pulley and pull it to the right and slip the belt off the motor pulley, use belt to lift the drum and pull out from cabinet. Remove old felt. do not get adhesive on you it is hell to get off. Use disposable gloves if possible. put glue around the tub, install the new felt, the fold face toward the back so that you can see the stitching. Allow 15 minutes for the adhesive to set up. Reinstall the drum, make sure the ridge of the drum is seated to the rollers in the back, put belt on the line where it has been riding and run hands around the belt making sure it is not twisted and the ribs are facing the drum. install the idler pulley in to the slot in front of the motor, pull belt through the idler pulley, pulley idler pulley to the right and re install the belt to the motor pulley. Re install the front of the dryer by inserting the clips on the inside of front in to the square holes on the cabinet front edge, re install wires for the door switch, the ones you remember where they went, put the screws back in to hold front panel, snap the top back down, put the screws back in at the lint filter area, Done! Wait about an hour before you run it to allow the adhesive to fully cure. These instructions are for most Whirlpool, kenmores made by whirlpool, roper, and kirkwood dryers. If this is not what you have contact me. Good luck.

Need to replace front felt seal. how do you do that?

If the front felt seal is cut or worn out there is probably some thing else wrong too so while you have it apart check the 2 supports that hold up the front of the drum from the bottom at about the 4:30 and 7:30 positions. For access to the felt: unplug the machine - Pop up the top from the front with a slot screwdriver - inside the front at the top corners there will be one screw on each side, remove them and the front will pull forward and lift of 2 hooks at the bottom - There will be wires connected to the door switch, mark and disconnect them before you pull the front away and break the switch - then you can remove the front support the big round thing, the felt is glued to the inside of this, and the supports are on the back side of this - look under the drum and see where the belt is connected to the drum- motor and tensioner, remember how it goes before you loosen it !!! Pick upward on the front of the drum and take it out of the cabinet. Put a few drops of sewing machine oil on the 2 roller supports on the backwall - spin them to make sure they are smooth and not wobbly - if they are replace them - the new seal comes with a tube of glue, remove the old one (watching how it goes back on) clean the metal and glue the new one on, check the front supports, put a few drop of oil on the belt tensioner and reassemble Cross your fingers

How do i change the belt on my whirlpool dryer ?

Step 1:
Start by removing the lint filter using your 5/16th
screwdriver, remove the two screws under the lint filter.

Step 2:
Next, take the putty knife and place it in the opening between the top of the dryer and the front of the dryer.
Pop up the top of the dryer and repeat on the other side.

Step 3:
Flip the top out of the way. There will be two screws in each upper corner of the inside of the dryer.Remove both of these and put screws in container for later.

Step 4:
The front of the dryer will now be released.Pull the top away from the cabinet and then lift it up.Swing the front to the side and place it out of the way.You may need to disconnect the lid switch wires if they are not long enough to allow this.

Step 5:
Release the belt from around the drum.To do this, the belt will be looped under the idler pulley and then attached to the motor.Reach under the drum and unhook the belt from around the motor.

Step 6:
To attach the new belt, begin by placing the belt around the entire drum. Then loop the belt under the idler pulley and attach it back to the motor. The idler pulley should apply tension to the belt. You may need an extra hand for this step since the dryer drum can sag down and make it difficult to reach the motor.

Step 7:
Make sure the rear felt on the back end of the drum is not folded under. If it has,use a screwdriver to pop the felt out while spinning the drum with your hand.

Step 8:
Reassemble the dryer.Make sure the small tabs on the bottom of the dryer match up with the small holes on the dryer front.Replace screws and lint trap.

My GE DDE8208PECAD Electric Dryer does not have the two screws to remove the top. How do you get it OFF?

On that model, you will need to push in the two spring clips, located in the seam where the front panel meets the top.

Dryer

That is an accurate description
the drum of all dryers is suspended from a combination of
felt pads at the drum ends
nylon glides under the drum
rubber tired thrust rollers.
the rubber tires wear, and the drum shifts, this pinches and wears the felts, then there is enough space to pinch the clothes in the gap
It is a simple enough fix, and well worthwhile, felts glides and rollers are cheap in comparison to new dryers.
Generically all dryers are pretty much the same, so when you go to the parts store, the felts rollers and glides may be labelled whirlpool or kenmore
they will fit exactly, there are very few that fit very many models.

To do the job
  • UNPLUG DRYER
  • If a top mounted lint screen, remove lint screen and 2 screws under lint screen from top of case
  • with a putty knife or other blunt blade release spring clips at front corners of lid, retaining lid to front panel
  • tilt lid up
  • remove 1screw each side 1/3 way down front
  • disconnect door switch wires
  • remove front panel and door
  • pull tensioner to end of its travel against tensioner spring, and unhook belt
(Note:: position of belt around tensinoer and motor pulleys for reinstall)
  • pull drum out forwards
  • motor, pulleys, support rollers, felts, and glides can now be inspected
good roller
3d57115.jpg bad roller
7133e59.jpg rollers are in pairs, if one is worn replace both

Inspect felts and nylon glides where fitted, any wear - replace

to replace felts
requirements 2 or more pairs locking pliers(visegrips) hitemp silicone adhesive
  • pull old felt off
  • scrape off old adhesive
  • spread gllue on drum edge
  • secure felt on drum with visegrip
  • pull felt into place, clip with visegrip, pull again clip with visegrips, work around until felt is attached to drum and clipped in place
  • allow glue to set
nylon glides, if fitted replace easily, a central screw, or glue

reassemble in reverse order

I need to replace the dryer belt

The belt on a dryer is inside the body, usually accessed and changed as follows

most base dryers
  • unplug dryer(220v is Not Fun)
  • remove lint screen
  • undo screws inside lint screen holder, screwing it to case lid (so lid can tilt up)
  • with putty knife or other blunt blade, release spring catches under front corners of case lid
  • raise case lid
  • remove screws 1/3 way down front corners of body holding front panel on
  • remove door switch cable from door switch
  • lift door off set aside
maytag
  • remove screws from bottom bend of front panel
  • lift front panel off
  • remove doo switch cable
  • sent front panel aside
  1. drum motor felts and bearings are now accessible.
  2. lift drum and withdraw fully forwards
  3. with drum removed check support rollers for free movement, check drum slides and/or drum felts for wear, easier to replace now, if worn, than have bearings or slides cause belt to break again.
  4. loop belt loosely around drum at wear marks from prior installation
  5. reinsert drum onto rollers bearings slides felts as installed.
  6. loop belt around motor pulley
  7. pull tensioner pulley against spring to end of its travel
  8. loop belt around tensioner pulley
  9. relax tensioner pulley to tighten belt
  10. rotate drum by hand to ensure belt is aligned
reassemble case in reverse order.

Notes
There are not many belt, felt, support roller sizes the local parts guy will have a belt, felt, roller to fit,

Tensioner pulley may not be in place, breaking belts often pull them out of their mounts, the pulley and spring will be lying on the case floor, there is only one way they fit in to their mounts so they are easy to reinstall

tensioner sketch is approximate, pulley may be on top run pulling down, or bottom run pushing up

the repair is easy, it takes longer to type or read this than it does to repair the dryer

Belts ~$14 Support Rollers ~$14/pair, felts/slides upto ~$25
New dryer +$200 - its a good repair

Hot point dryer

the drum has dropped
the drum is suspended on felt pads to seal the drum edges, nylon guides at the front, and rubber tyred thrust rollers to withstand the torque of the motor and belt at the rear.
the usual cause is the rollers have failed, common fault, easy fix, cheap too
good rollers look like this
1ac2db2.jpg worn rollers like this
34b5f0e.jpg
try not to run the dryer till the rollers are replaced, the extra strain will break the belt,

  1. drum motor felts and bearings are now accessible.
  2. pull tensioner fully agains spring
  3. remove belt from motor pulley
  4. lift drum and withdraw fully forwards
  5. with drum removed check support rollers for free movement, check drum slides and/or drum felts for wear
reassemble.
  1. loop belt loosely around drum at wear marks from prior installation
  2. reinsert drum onto rollers bearings slides felts as installed.
  3. loop belt around motor pulley
  4. pull tensioner pulley against spring to end of its travel
  5. loop belt around tensioner pulley
  6. relax tensioner pulley to tighten belt
  7. rotate drum by hand to ensure belt is aligned
reassemble case in reverse order.

Replacing belt on dryer

FIRST, OPEN THE DOOR AND REMOVE TWO PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS ON EACH SIDE OF THE OPENING. TWO GO THROUGH THE HINGES, AND TWO ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE OPENING. THEN, PULL THE OUTER PANEL FORWARD FROM THE SIDES NEAR THE TOP. IT IS HINGED AT THE BOTTOM. LIFT IT OFF THE HINGE WHEN YOU HAVE THE TOP EDGE PULLED FORWARD. YOU WILL HAVE ABOUT SIX OR EIGHT 5/16 HEX HEAD SCREWS TO REMOVE
AND THE FRONT BULKHEAD WILL THEN COME FORWARD TO REMOVE. AT THIS POINT, THE FRONT OF THE DRUM IS EXPOSED AND YOU CAN SLIP THE NEW BELT ON FROM THE FRONT. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THE DIAGRAM ON THE BAG FOR PROPER ALIGNMENT AROUND THE IDLER AND MOTOR PULLEYS. IT WILL BE EASIER TO INSTALL THE BELT IF YOU LAY IT IN THE GROOVE NEAR THE REAR OF THE DRUM, BUT THAT IS NOT IT'S FINAL RESTING PLACE.
AFTER YOU HAVE THE BELT AROUND THE PULLEYS, REPLACE THE FRONT BULKHEAD WITH FOUR SCREWS, ONE FOR EACH CORNER. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T FOLD OVER THE FELT SEAL AROUND THE FAN HOUSING. SLIDE THE LINT DUCT PORT INSIDE THE FELT SEAL. ONCE THE BULKHEAD IS IN PLACE, PULL THE BELT OUT OF THE GROOVE AND SLIDE IT TOWARD YOU UNTIL IT LAYS ON TOP OF THE MARKS THAT THE OLD BELT LEFT BEHIND.
ROTATE THE DRUM MANUALLY COUNTER CLOCKWISE TO BE SURE THE BELT IS ALIGNED AROUND THE DRUM.
IF IT IS NOT, THE BELT WON'T STAY ON THE PULLEYS.
AFTER YOU ARE SURE IT IS O.K., REASSEMBLE THE REST OF THE DRYER IN REVERSE ORDER.

Kenmore 90 seies belt replacement

you have to remove the top and front panel,if you have a top lint filter remove the two lint screen filter screws, pull the top toward you and up,lint screen inside, most pull forward and up,so you might have to remove the two console head screws(one on each side, flip up and remove 4 more screws, now disconnect the door switch, now remove the 2 screws on the front panel top 1 on each side, now pull up and off, remove any other wires that might go to the door, now pull the drum out,now look down at the motor pulley wheel and the idler wheel, the belt goes around the drum, now put the drum back in place, now put the belt under the idler wheel and up onto the motor pulley, replace everything and your done-mike
