The heater is shutting down because the photocell does not see the correct flame color.
Since you say "comes on for 5 seconds", I can only assume that there is a flame. You do not specify a lack of flame. I am also assuming that you have had the heater running this heater season and the problem just started.

YOU must find out if the problem is fuel related or electronics related.

  1. Is fuel spraying into the combustion chamber?
  2. Is the ignitor (glowbar) turning red?
  3. Check the photocell for obstructions. It may be blind.
If you answer "yes" to questions 1 & 2, then your problem is most likely a fuel related problem. You must start by checking the pump pressure and find out if the air pump is operating to factory specs.

If the ignitor fails to glow, further troubleshooting of the electronics will be required.

Let us know what you find and report the results. Also, find the exact model of your heater if you have further questions.

It could be the flame sensor. It is located in the burner box Opposite from the ignitor. It is a metal rod with a porcelain base. The flame sensor "senses" a small electric current through the flame. If the sensor is dirty it can impede the electrical current and cause the control board to lock out. Remove the sensor and clean the rod with some steel wool or sandpaper. Reinstall and see if this solves the problem. Hope this helps.

I have a laars lite 2 manual controls natural gas. The unit starts up runs strong for 5 mins shuts down restarts runs for now only seconds and shuts off

sounds like the hi limit switch is shutting it down, because it is not getting enough water, cloged filter, valve to heater notopen, bypass valve not closed, open up the water releif valve with the pump running should be alot of water running coming out of it.

I have a dyno glo work horse kerosene heater modle rmckfa65-wh I TURN ON HEATER BUT IT WILL ONLY STAY RUNNING FOR 5 TO 6 SECONDS.WHAT DO I NEED TO DO TO KEEP IT RUNNING?

If it is a gas, thermo type heater, then the thermocouple is bad.Check and make sure the pilot lite flame is touching the tip of the thermocouple,if it is not, adjust it,to where it will.If it is not adjustable, replace the thermocouple.

Heater just hums for a few seconds but will not ignite. The heater has not been running for some time.

When you say the heater hums is the fan turning? Providing the fan is turning remove the top cover on the heater. Turn the heater on and watch the back of the burner area. Do you see any fuel mist coming from the nozzle? Do you see the ignitor sparking or glowing. Providing you see the ignitor working check the air pressure on the back on the unit. Remove the plug on the back of the unit that does not have a hole drilled in it. Insert a gauge into the hole (1/8" pipe thread) The pressure should be 5 to 6 psi. Let me know what you find and I can tell you how to proceed from there.

Reddy pro155 runs for 3 to 5 seconds

Reply with the correct model number. "Pro 155" designates a series. We need to know whether you have a heater with a spark plug or a heater with an ignitor (glowbar).

Igniter lites up fan kicks on and within 5 sec shuts off

Dustin, The ignitor only glows for 5 seconds, just long enough to ignite the fuel. The heater is shutting down because the photocell does not see the correct flame color.
Since you say "comes on for 5 seconds", I can only assume that there is a flame. You do not specify a lack of flame. I am also assuming that you have had the heater running this heater season and the problem just started.

YOU must find out if the problem is fuel delivery related or electronics related. Start by checking the pump pressure.

It runs but it puffs smoke every 3 - 5 seconds.

I am not real familiar with the Mr Heater units, although I have been around Reddy Heaters for well over 30 years. The principal is the same, after all, Mr heater is a foreign knock-off of the Reddy Heater.
Check, in this order:
1. shine a flashlight in the tank- look for water droplets rolling around on the bottom.
2. check the fuel filter for restriction. A blocked filter will cause starvation.
3. with soapy water check for air leaks from the air pump to the nozzle. An air leak will cause reduced fuel delivery.
4. check the pump pressure, bring up to factory specs.
5. If you have turned the adjustment screw, move #5 up to #1.
6. check or replace the nozzle.
7. If the fuel delivery system checks out OK then you have an electronics problem, and I’ve been told that Mr Heater parts are rare and hard to come by.
