Question about Dell Dimension 3000 PC Desktop

4 Answers

No Sound! Unfortunately, I've had nothing but problems with my Dell Dimension 3000. But this time I admit it's my fault. I was cleaning up files when I accidentally uninstalled the Max Sound program. I thought that it was part of this other program that I was also getting rid of... but it turns out that I erased my own soundcard, or something like that, because now I can't hear a thing. I've tried searching for downloads on the Internet, but can't find one for the 3000. I have had my computer for two years now, so my warranty has run out, and they won't help me unless I pay them money. Can someone please tell me how to get my sound back, and/or where I can download the program? Thanks so much!! My patience is wearing thin...

Re: No Sound!

Here is the download page for the Dimension 3000 (Windows XP): Go to the audio driver page and assuming you have the built-in audio card this should take care of you. If you by chance have some other operating system here is the link that will allow you to select the correct one.

My Dell Dimension tower was recently knocked of the desk by my cat sleeping on top of if. Now it beeps 2 time and 2 times again, fan and everything appears to be running but nothing coming on to the...

Most Dell systems have beep codes that are in groups of three, so I don't know for certain what yours is saying. But after a fall it's a good bet something has come loose inside. I would suspect memory first. Take the cover off and make sure the RAM modules are seated firmly and latched into their sockets. This page at Dell shows you where the RAM sockets are and details how to install memory. Also be sure the processor is firmly seated in its socket. Unless the computer really got knocked about, the processor is likely to be okay; it's pretty well secured and RAM is more often what comes loose.

Without the RAM properly operating, nothing else in the computer will happen properly when you start it. Once you've reseated the memory in yours it will probably start up without further troubles.

(And as a fellow cat owner I feel your pain. Unfortunately it was an external drive that my cat knocked off the desk, and it didn't survive the fall. Lots of music and videos gone now...sigh.)

During a recent thunderstorm, the power fluctuated and my dell dimension 3000 turned off. There was popping sound and now I cannot power on the computer. When I take off the side panel, I can see a green...

The popping sound is most likely your power supply or something on your system-board like a capacitor.
If the problem is only the power supply:
If you want to see if you can salvage it try just replacing the power supply. The part is around forty dollars. You can google "Dell Dimension 3000 250w power supply" to find a deal on a power supply. Here is a link on how to replace the power supply in that computer.

Hope that helps.

Had to reformat C: on Dell Dimension 3000. Now can't get any sound. Tried to download drivers from Dell but it comes as an application and I can't open it. Any advice please?

Most of the Dell driver downloads are .exe files. They are self-extracting executables (much like a ZIP file). You need to first double-click the downloaded file and when the extraction window pops up, make not of the directory that the file is going to extract to (usually c:\dell or c:\drivers). Once you noted the directory, continue with extracting the files. Then go into your device manager (control panel, system, hardware, device manager) and find the sound device that is either disabled or not loaded properly (usually will have a yellow exclamation mark next to it). Double click the device and "update driver". When prompted, point to the folder that the files extracted to earlier, and then the device should load properly.

Some Dell drivers include a setup.exe file, but most of them follow the above-listed format.
