According to the Aspire 3000 User Guide, you should be able to use Fn and F5 (not F6) to toggle the display selection. Try that first. If that doesn't resolve the problem...

Your laptop probably has the SiS Mirage 2 graphics processor. It's max resolution is 1024 x 768. The Sceptre DCL9C will likely default at 1280 x 1240. Try backing the resolution (in Control Panel) down to 1024 x 768 - for the external monitor. Also, hit the AUTO button on the monitor. It might reset itself to be compatible with the SiS video. Lastly, download the latest drivers for your OS and the SiS Mirage 2 video adapter.

I hope this helps! Please post rating, if it does.

Connecting an External Monitor or Data Projector
You can switch to anexternal monitor or data projector by two methods.1. Connect the externalmonitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and thelaptop. The video information will automatically switch to the externalmonitor.2. If you power up thelaptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor bypressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make andmodel laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCDscreen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fnkey plus one of the function key. When conneting Acer Aspire 5810TG to a Samsung LCD LE32M6. The Samsung LCD shows 'no signal'.

On most laptops, you need to turn on the external monitor connector from a function key on the keyboard. It doesn't automatically sense you've hooked up the other monitor. On your model, hold down the Fn key and press F5 to switch the external connector on. Here's the page from the user guide with the key combinations you might find helpful:

Have you tried to disconnect the external monitor and just booting to the laptop? If this works, then use the "e" key next to the power button to add the second monitor.
