Question about Sony KP-53S65 53" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Sony KP-53s65 Tried using the DVE -DVD alignment disc to improve the picture.. All images are sort of dim. When I try to boost brightness, color becomes over saturated. How do I determine if the projection bulb(s) need replacement and if thats the problem? What should the ideal repair cost from a reputable service?

Re: Sony KP-53s65

Take the back off oh unplug it first and then read the label that says no user serviceable parts inside its kinda like the tag on pillows the three delta lenses can be cleaned with a soft cloth dampened with windex they are an optical grade of plastic like the screen so all those caveats apply if you are really brave you can take the lense assemblies off and clean (gently the concave) portion of the top of the crts they are filled with coolant and should be treated with care if you are really brave use windex on the plate glass mirror if you are nice to your tv it will look real good when you get done it will look even better if you know how to refocus the focus block and the screen controls all the home theater dvds wont make up for zen and the art of projo maintenance

I recently bought a Sony KP-53HS30 rear video TV

Hello Sarah!
There is no bulb to replace in your TV. Image is created by three CRT's and you don't want to replace them, just trust me on that one. It could cost you up to $1800 to do that.
All you can do is to clean lenses of those CRT's. You have to disconnect TV from the power outlet and remove rear cover. Using very soft brush and vacuum cleaner remove dust from Red, Green and Blue CRT lenses. Do not use solutions unless you got something special for optics. Solutions will leave film on the surfaces. That would improve brightness and contrast of image.
To adjust focus front grille have to be removed. Than central piece cover held by 5 screws. Behind it you can locate black plastic "box" size little smaller than cigarette pack. there are 6 adjustment "screws". Three of them are "screen". You don't touch those. Another three "focus" there is one for each color. Turn TV on. Hit "menu" button. And adjust focus for each color separately. If menu goes away hit it again.
This is the only improvements you can do.
Everything else will involve humongous amounts of cash.
Good luck!

53" sony projection -picture washed out w/ green horizontal lines

It sounds like your Green CRT ( picture tube ) is shorted. That's the one in the middle. Sony had issues with there tubes in those years. Sorry for the bad news. Even if you could locate the tube, it will be a matter of time before the Red or Blue does the same.

Tv gets bright and then get dim and dose this the entire time tv is on

If you watch a DVD, does the picture also flash? If not, it might be just the TV signal. Are you using a cable/satellite receiver? If so, check it's connections. If anything viewed on the TV, using different inputs and a different cable/wire, is flashing, it is a problem with the light engine or color wheel, if the TV is DLP.

KP-53S65 Blue Ghosting

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Half the screen has ghost image (not focused)

Replace the convergence ICs. They are located on a large aluminum heat sink with STK numbers stamped on them. They cost about 10.00 each. They have to be soldered in. Let me know if you need anything further.

Sony KP 53S65 53" rear projection TV contrast issue

While the root of the problem is likely the picture tubes aging, I'm sure it would benefit from a cleaning and adjusting. After the dust is cleaned from the lenses, the screen controls could likely be lowered to get the blacks you desire. An experienced tech would be able to do this for you.
