Get a cotton swab, dip it in rubbing alcohol, and stick it on to one end of the slot, pull it out, move down a little bit, and repeat. DO NOT stick it in and slide it across the slot as this will damage the pins inside the slot. if you need to clean slot-2 (for GBA games, on the bottom) you will need to flatten the swab with pliers of other such tool

Sounds like your system needs to either be cleaned or a new card slot installed on the unit. there are many shops on fixya if you check the directory that will help you out.
