It sounds as if you may need a specific update for that drive, or even some firmware, but usually you can just search for the drivers in the recovery drive. however, if the combo drive didn't come with the unit then you will probably need to go to that company's website and get the driver's for your particular os. Failing that, then make sure your jumpers are set correctly if you added any new herdware on the ide cables, or make sure that your SATA drivers are installed.

if it was working before and you have not upgraded from a previous OS then somethng else has changed your settings or drivers. It is doubtful that it is a hardware problem. perform a "System Restore" back to the last time things were working properly

providing that you have enough room on the harddrive all you should have to do is insert the cd and turn off the computer and restart than it will say boot from cd than it will say boot from cd press any key than after this it should start the examining process and after this it will ask you if you want to install or upgrade or repair say either upgrade or install and go from their.
If it shows the partition with the current version on it you can delete the partition or create a new partition so this is up to you but be advised if you delete the partition all data (will) be lost ok ? and you will have to create a partition DONT FORGET THIS STEP IF YOU DECIDE TO DELETE THE PARTITION OK? BUT IF if no partition is shown just continue with the installation and the rest is very self explanitory ok? i hope this helped out a lot
best regards michael

DVD writer read but doesn't burn

You are going to have to use the ‘rule-out’ method to begin; remove your DVD-ROM and only install your DVD-RW drive as master; see if that solves the problem (a side-note; burners should be set to master and the other drive should be slave).
