Question about Miele Red Star Bagged Canister Vacuum

1 Answer

Intermittent a/c voltage

Appears the winder contacts may be worn out. Cord checks fine; cuts on and off, can usually get it started by winding cord to a certain position. Can you replace the contacts?

The contacts are fine, they just need to be bent up a little to ensure proper pressure with contact plate. I had exactly the same problem, and it solved it.
Do not remove black graphite lubricant from contacts!!!

I have a Miele Solaris that is having an intermittent power problem. The power will not turn on unless I push the cord winder button at the same time as the power button. I have disassembled the vacuum and...

These type of cord retractors have a set of contacts which sometimes get corroded or bent. Or maybe the reel has become wobbly.
As the cord reel moves, these contacts should have enough pressure stay in contact with the tracks on the reel at all times.

You sound like a handy person, so you would have to take the assembly right out of the machine and perhaps be able to correct the situation.
Some of these contacts are easily accessible, and others not so easily.

While you have the old assembly out anyway, you also might be able to buy a new one to replace it.

Without a close look it's hard to guess what to advise you.

Maybe a vac repair shop could throw in an tune up as well?
Check the motor brushes and so on?

The cord will not rewind

These get stuck all the time...I own 2 of these , and I have done this many times...Get a can of WD40 or some type of spray lubricant with the little straw in the nozzle. Try pulling and pushing the cord back inside(don't pull it too hard) while you are spraying the lubricant directly inside where the cord comes out. push the cord back in as if you were going to force all of it back inside the cord winder. You may even have to bump the back of the machine where the cord winder is located. But it will wind back up.If you are worried about getting the lubricant on something that it doesn't need to be on , then take the Vac apart and spray it directly on the the coils of the cord winder..A lot of times, that's all they do in the repair shop when they tell you they replaced the cord winder....

One day, I pressed the "on" button and it didn't start...had no problems whatsoever before. The inside hose is clear-fan turns-no visible breaks in the electrical cord or plug...

You need to measure for voltage inside the machine between the white wire and black wire from the power cord. If zero, the cord is likely broken at or near the plug end. This is a common problem if one pulls the plug by yanking on the cord instead of pulling on the plug directly. In any case, try cutting the cord off a little way back from the plug, and fit a new replacement plug from a home center or hardware store. If the voltage test above showed line voltage (115 volts AC in the US), then turn the switch to on, and measure for voltage between the white wire and the motor side of the switch. If good, then likely there is a motor brush problem or a broken winding in the motor. Repair of this usually requires dis-assembly of the housing around the motor. Hope this helps!

Miele just stopped working?

Hello,

When a Miele canister just stops working all of a sudden, it's usually a pretty clear indication that either you have a bad cord reel, or a bad switch. I would say that in 60% of Miele repairs that I do with this problem, the cord reel has gone bad.

One easy thing that you can try to see if the cord is bad, is put one hand on the on/off switch, and the other hand grab the cord (making sure it's fully retracted inside the canister). Now pull the cord out slowly with your one hand, while continously turning the switch on / off, on / off. Keep pressing the switch on and off while pulling on the cord. Usually if the cord reel has gone bad, then you may hear the vacuum attempt to start, or even turn on while you're pulling on the cord. The cord reels in Miele use a metal spring inside that makes connection with the rest of the vacuum. Over time this spring will start to loose it's strength, and eventually will get so bad that it no longer makes contact with the rest of the vacuum. By pulling the cord out slowly and pressing the on / off switch, a lot of the times the spring will make connection somewhere, and the motor may turn on temporarily.

If this happens, this indicates your cord reel needs to be replaced. I have done a detailed repair here on Fixya on how to replace the cord on a Miele canister vacuum that you may read here;
http://www.fixya.com/support/t2281026-miele_s514_will_not_come

If you can't get the vacuum to turn on at all, this can only mean a few things. First the cord reels spring is gone completely, and wont make any connection with the rest of the vacuum, and you'll still need to replace it.

It also can mean that just the plug that plugs into the wall is bad, is your plug bent, or no longer straight on either prong?

It can also mean that your motor has gone bad. This however is usually the least likely of all the problems. The Miele motors are almost bullet proof, and typically last 20 years. I can count on one hand the number of Miele motor replacements I've ever done in 10 years of fixing vacuums.

I can try and help you diagnosis this further if my suggestions didn't help you. Please use the clarification request that you see here on this page to ask me a question. Please just let me know what happened when you tested the cord out as I suggested above. I really hope this was helpful to you. If you found this to be helpful, please be sure to rate the repair as helpful to you by clicking the thumbs up icon. I really appreciate that.

Won't start

It is most likely your cord winder. They are a little tricky to fix yourself. A repair shop will probably charge about $50. To fix it. The contacts where the cord winder plugs into the motor need to be cleaned and adjusted. Just don't let your repairman tell you that you need a new cord winder.

Hey guys ! I have (or my wife has) A KENMORE whispertone 116. When my wife is cleaning with it it will suddenly stops. She then wiggles/pulls on the cord and it starts again and the stops.I pulled the cord...

It definitely sounds like the cord winder is the problem. I can tell you how to take the machine apart, but it's just about impossible to rebuild that winder. When you take the winder apart the spring blows apart, and it's very dangerous. I won't be doing that again. lol Another option is to replace the winder and that is just not cost effective, and it will go bad again.

You could just take out the winder and wire a regular cord in it's place if you want to save the vacuum. You can tie the new cord in couple knots to keep it from pulling out of the unit.

As for taking the machine apart, you probably found the two screws under the hood. Sometimes they hide others under the hepa filter, but the really hard ones to find are under the cord retract button. You have to pop that off to access them.

Hope this helped. Good Luck

Cord winder not working

Most times you will have to replace the cord rewind. Sometimes just the cord, but usually there is a problem with thr reel contacts. But now that the spring has unwound, you will have to replace it. You will need model number rather then Red Star.
