Hi hernanezcol,

The start-up system isn't seeing your hard drive - - either disconnected, corrupted or damaged.

If damaged, you'll have to buy a new hard drive and either replace it or have it replaced.

Do you have Applecare? If so, contact your local Apple store and use it to limit you cost of service if you don't do it yourself.

If disconnected (unlikely unless you've been digging around inside), you'll have to re-attach the ribbon cable.

If corrupted, you'll have to reformat and reimage that hard drive, using your start-up DVD disks. I'd use Disk Utility to reformat the drive (assuming a single partition, Mac OS-X only - - if you want multiple partitions, write back and let me know so I can include that detail). The reinstall the operating system.

If you had data on that hard drive that you didn't back-up, you can either pay someone to retrieve it for you (if it's possible) or just learn from this to back-up your data on a regular basis.

If I can be of further assistance, or if you have questions, let me know before rating me.

If this solves the issue, please rate it accordingly. My goal is to earn a "FixYa" rating from everyone I help.

Thanks in-advance for using Fixya.com,

Jon

MacBook Air ? mark flashing

Short answer -> If the flashing icon is a question mark on a folder, it means that your MacBook cannot find a bootable drive.

Longer answer-> If you have an Apple store near you, they can diagnose it more thoroughly. If you have been doing periodic backups to a Time Capsule or other device, take that with you.

Flashing question mark

Sounds like your computer needs to be looked at by a tech. Usually the flashing question mark means it doesn't recognize the hard drive or is unable to locate an operating system.

Won't turn on

The problem in blank white screen is the display (LCD). Send it to a technician for repair. The blinking folder with a question mark is conflict on drivers. Have you installed a software lately? If you do please uninstall it. Maybe that is the cause of having a blank white screen.

I have a macbook laptop with damaged dvd cd drive. I am getting a white screen and folder with a question mark when i start up computer. What is the problem and how do i fix it?

The folder with the question mark indicates that the computer is unable to boot (start) from the hard drive. I would ordinarily tell you to put in your system disc and boot from it to use Disk Utility to fix your drive. But you say your DVD burner is broken.

1. Hold down the power button to turn off your machine.
2. Hold down Command and S together and press the power button to turn the machine back on.
3. It will boot to a black screen with white text. Once it gets done, type

fsck -fy

and press the Return key. This will check and hopefully fix your drive.
4. Once it's done, it will either say, "This disk appears to be okay." (or something like that, or "File system has been modified." If it says that the file system has been modified, return to step 3 and type fsck -fy again (and then press Return).
5. Once you see the message that the disk appears to be okay, type

reboot

and press the return key.

Hopefully your machine will boot up successfully. If so, please leave a comment so we know it worked (and please give me a good rating). If not, leave a comment with details and we'll try something else.

Good luck!

When I start my macbook a blue screen appears with a folder with a ? mark in it flashing

That message means that it can't find the start up folder and or your hard drive has crashed.

If you insert your OS disk or a copy of Disk Warrior you can boot to the cd / dvd by holding down the "C" key and then powering up the Macbook.

Let me know if you have that OS cd and then we'll go from there.

Blinking file folder with question mark and a DVD is stuck in it

Hello, The blinking file folder with the question mark can happen when the computer doesn't "see" your System. It can be caused by a faulty hard drive, or by a damaged operating system. You can try to reboot the mac, hold the mouse button during 20 seconds to eject the CD, then insert you installation DVD (leopard). Reboot the Mac again, and hold the "C" key. Select english, the go to the tools menu, and Disk Utility. Go to the SOS tab, select your drive and click "repair". If something red appears, it means that it has found something wrong on your hard drive. Best regards

Question mark when turn on laptop

Unfortunately, the clicking sound means that the hard drive is bad. That is why it will not boot. If it is under warranty, call Apple support. 800.275.2273 in the US.
800.263.3394 in Canada

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
