Whirlpool Duet Washer fills with water when not being used

After the wash cycle is over and the washer is empty, sometimes it fills with water and when I open the door, it floods out!

We have the same problem with ours. My husband took it apart and cleaned out the drain because it also got to where it wouldn't drain all the water out. We found all kinds of stuff in there, but the worst was a small child's sock that completely blocked the drain along with ink pens etc. Now we are again experiencing the water coming in. He took it apart again but the drain line is clean still. We will try the valve cleaning to see if that finishes fixing the problem.

We have had the same problem, but it is very inconsistent. Maybe once a month we will find anywhere from an inch to three inches of water. We just got the idea that it may happen after a "hand-wash" cycle. We will have to watch.

Seems to fill after a heavy rain or extended sprinkler use.

It seems my washer is possessed.  Just got home and found the entire laundry room floor covered in water, opened the washer door and more water came pouring out.  The washer hasn't been used in 5 days.   And the floor was bone dry two hours ago when I left.

Having a similar issue, but it is consistent. After a load is done, I verify it has drained properly and remove the damp clothes. Within 24 hours, I will have 1 to 3 inches of water back in the washer. Interesting thing is we didn't have this problem until moving it to a new location with a newly installed drain! This certainly points to a problem with the drain (siphoning) but the drain work great during the wash cycle, so I'm not sure where the siphoning would come from. The washer drain only goes a few inches into the 2" abs drain pipe which is several feet high. If the drain were backing up that much I would expect to have water all over the floor, but I don't. I'm going to try turning the water valves off to hopefully prove this is a valve issue that happened during the move of the washer somehow. That seems a far easier replacment than reworking the plumbing!

Water accumulating in the tub is usually caused by two things:

Leak by - which is caused by a water inlet valve malfunction. The valve has an electronically controlled diaphragm that closes to shut the water off when not in use. Over time the valve can accumulate sediment and debris causing the valve not to seat all the way. This is especially true if you live in an area that has hard water, or if you use well water. This will cause water to leak by when the valve is not in use and accumulate over time in the wash tub. You can attempt to clean the valve with distilled vinegar to remove any sediments and flush it with clean water. You will need to remove the valve in order to do this. Sometimes a good cleaning is all it takes to correct the problem. If not, I would recommend replacing it.

Siphoning - siphoning occurs when the drain line is installed incorrectly. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r587481-prevent_washer_siphoning

Although the problem usually describes a condition where a washer constantly fills and drains, or cannot maintain the proper water level, it can also cause back flow from the drain. Double check your drain line installation to ensure there is a proper air gap to allow for proper draining. If not, a vacuum is created and drain water can back flow into the washer.

A simple test would be to shut the water supply off when not in use. If the washer STILL accumulates water, you know you have a drain problem. If it does NOT, then you know you have an inlet valve issue.

If you need to replace the water inlet valve, replacements can be ordered on line at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and look under the "Dispenser Parts" heading for item number 1 (part #8181694).

It is a very simple process to replace. Just follow these steps:

1. Shut off water supply and unplug washer.
2. Disconnect fill hoses from the back of the washer.
3. Remove washer top panel by removing the three screws that hold it in place in the rear. With the screws removed, the panel slides back, then off.
4. The water inlet valve is located in the left rear of the washer (as viewed from the front with panel removed).
5. Disconnect the dispenser hose from the valve and the mounting screw(s) and the valve is removed.
6. Install new valve using the steps above in reverse order.

It really is a very simple repair. I hope you find this information helpful. Let me know if you still require assistance.

Turned on whirlpool duet washer, came back to FH as realized forgot to turn water on. Have tried all the suggestions, but each time I plug the machine it tries to drain water and the motor hums. I cannot...

Make sure both hot and cold water supplies are turned on. Select a cold wash cycle and start the wash cycle, do you get cold water? Now select a hot wash cycle and start the wash cycle, do you get hot water? If you only get cold water replace the hot water fill valve. If you only get hot water replace the cold water fill valve. If you get neither replace both fill valves.

Long cycles on my whirlpool duet washer

it's probably the timer or a cold-water supply problem:

  • It's the timer, if your washing machine fills with water and begins agitating, but the timer never advances--or if the washer is in a spin cycle and the timer won't advance. Then you need to replace the timer.

  • It may be a cold-water supply problem, if the washing machine fills with water, agitates, drains, and spins, but then doesn't fill with rinse water. See There's no cold water.

Water in bleach/fabric softne compartment

Purchased the duet washer and dryer sept 2004..have had the same problem with water staying in the compartments. while under warranty had to place 2 service calls..the last tech order a new bleach compartment...that helped for a few months, but back to the same problem with having to pull entire container out and empty..i do remember the tech saying that whirlpool duet was first introduced in germany...then the united states...they have had the same problem...and that whirlpool is awhere of it, but nothing can be done about...except keep emptying compartment when it fills with water...our neighbor bought a duet washer last fall...no problems like we are having..whirlpool must of solved that issue with the newer versions.... paying $1000.00 for a washer and having to empty the compartment everytime doesn't make sense to me.
