You can tell it to take the shortest route, and this will go on all roads including backroads, or you can tell it to take the fastest route and it will include highways. I would highly suggest you leave it on 'fastest route' setting.
First - look at your Route Options and see if you have any avoidances set and whether they are really what you want. Check you other route option settings while you are there to be sure it hasn't been set to some mode you didn't intend (like pedestrian).
You will likely find that your problem is in your route options setting, but if it isn't, then log on to http://www.garmin.com, select the support button on top, and then select contact support. There is both a phone and an email option. Garmin offers free technical support for their units.
Question: Why does my nuvi route me off highways and through small side roads?
Answer: If your nuvi routes you off of the highway and puts you on small side streets, usually there is a simple navigational settings change that should resolve the issue for you.
From the 'Where to?'/'View Map' screen:
Touch the 'Wrench' icon. Touch 'Navigation' icon.¹
On this menu there will be a 'Route Preference' and 'Avoidances' menu option.
If you have the 'Route Preference' set to 'Shorter Distance', this may sometimes route you off of a highway to put you on a more direct route. Try setting the 'Route Preference' to 'Faster Time' and see if that makes a difference in how the unit routes you.
Another setting that can be adjusted is the 'Avoidances' option, touch on 'Enabled' next to 'Avoidances' A list of avoidances will appear, on that list if 'Highways' is checked then the unit thinks that you do not want to travel on highways and therefore routes you off of them. Simply uncheck the box next to 'Highways' and that should resolve the issue.

I had "highways" listed, so I'm hoping this fixes my problem tomorrow.
I am not sure which model of the Nuvi you are using but I have the Nuvi 660 and can feel your pain. What use is going over a mountain or down roads made of gravel and miles from civilization only because it is technically a "shorter route"
So here are the basic directions to change that setting and get the Nuvi to keep you on the highways and interstates. If it varies too much, either respond with your model number or go to Garmin.com and get the manual for your model:
Go to SETTINGS then NAVIGATION click on ROUTE PREFERENCES
You should find what you need here, but to tell the Nuvi which type of roads to avoid and which ones to stick to:
go back to the SETTINGS menu touch NAVIGATION again and click on AVOIDANCES
Hope this helps and be sure to keep us updated! TJ
Have you selected how you want to get there, shortest distance, or fastest trip. You can set these under the wrench menu, If you aim for fastest, usually it will select all highway, if you select shortest distance it will calculate a trip that will drag you through every nook and cranny, usually quite entertaing (sightseeing)
