AC is the power adapter that hooks your computer to the wall outlet.

The battery usually has a sliding clip on the bottom of the laptop that releases it.

Hi,

Initially, the cable from the HDD would be an IDE flat cable where one side has a red marking. Additionally, in most motherboard and hard drive, there is no way that the IDE cable could be inserted wrongly. There is a tab at the center of one side of the connector. Even if the IDE for some reason was connected wrongly, the system will hang but not shut down. What I suspect is the power cable. This would be the red, black, black, yellow that goes to one side of the 40Gb HD. Remember the red mark on the IDE cable, the red wire should be close to it also. If there are other devices installed on the same IDE cable, one has to be the master, the other slave. In between the HD power connector and the IDE flat cable would be several jumpers. If the HD is a Seagate, the last two pins closer to the IDE flat cable has to be shorted to be the primary. If there is a CD/DVD drive attached along the same IDE cable, it should be made a slave by putting a jumper on the pins marked SL. therafter, reboot and allow the BIOS to auto detect these devices.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

Can you detect the 40GB hard drive when you are on the POST of your computer? Do get to the POST, restart your computer then click on F1 or the Del key. Make sure to press the key before the Windows Logo screen appears. If you can't detect it, there might be problem with the jumper settings or Cable settings from your Motherboard to the HD.

There would be like a pins at the back of your HD. You may tell us the brand of your HD so we can look for the jumper settings of it.

You always need to turn the computer off before swaping components. Remove the battery and AC, try to start up after 5 minutes of no power on the laptop with only the ac connected does it start up or what is the problem? the hard drive is no longer working?

Gateway MT6840 unexpectedly shut down and wouldn't

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

IBM Thinkpad A31 2652 wont switch on

This is bad news, the smell you have noticed from the ThinkPad is most likely caused by an electrical short in the power circuit and the cost of repair would not be a cost effective solution, a replacement motherboard may not be available because of the age of this model ThinkPad.

You maybe able to retrieve your data from the hard drive by removing the hard drive and connect to an USB hard drive adapter then connect it to a working computer's USB port. This computer will see this drive as an external USB hard drive and you can copy the data off this hard drive.

I need to upgrade my internal hard drive, what exactly do I need to get the most storage for my Toshiba Notebook Satellite A135-S4666? I would like to have 500gb or more of storage.

There are two kinds of hard drives and you must learn which one your computer has. To do this, Turn the computer off, diconnect the power chord and remove the battery. Locate and remove your present hard drive.

If the connection end of the drive has two plastic covered connection locations, you have a SATA drive.

If the connection end has more than 40 pins, you have an IDE drive. There is no way you can confuse the two types.

Go to your favourite computer parts source (ebay, web store or real store) and buy the largest drive that they have and that you can afford. Install the drive and install your favourite Operating System.

The largest IDE drive is 320 GB and the largest SATA drives I've seen are 500 GB. Best of good computing with your new drive.

Hd power problem systemax cpu

If you would provide more information about your Systemax system... model/serial number I can look the specs up. I can tell you the only way that it could be the hard drive would be if you had a bad power supply, not that your system can't handle the "power" of the hard drive. If you end up getting a new power supply, you could opt for one with a little higher wattage if you'd like. A 160gb hard drive isn't going to pull any more meaningful amount of current than a 40gb. What I would look at would be wither you had the jumpers on the hard drive configured correctly. For info on jumpers, see...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumper_(computing)

Individual drive manufactures and drive models have different method for setting the jumpers and it will also very on what other IDE connected devices you have in your computer (optical drives, hard drives, Zip drives, and etc.).

POWER FAILURE AFTER HD CONNECT

Ok ATA is the standard for data transfer, in this case it is IDE. 133 is the max transfer rate. I have removed the hard drive from ours (bought from dell directly and has not been changed) and the hard drive is set as Master (no jumper). Try this if it does not work i would test the hard drive in another system or in an inclosure.

I PLUG IN A BRAND NEW WESTINGH. HARD DRIVER 160 GB AND COMPUTER S

did you configure the 160GB hard drive as second???
there is a shorting pin between the ribbem cable and the power cable.
take a look on the hard drive, there should have adiagram shows where the shorting pin need to go to make it as secondary drive.
install the hard drive as secondary drive.
if you want the drive to be the primary. you nee to install the operating system on it.
with out operating system the machine will boot up in to DOS only, and a error message telling you the drive has no loader.
