Question about Skype IM

4 Answers

Mounting failed I have a new hard drive in my G4.  I am getting a "mounting failed" message when trying to download several programs that I have used easily on my old drive -- Skype and VLC video driver are two of them.  I notice that a "Tuk Tuk" user had the same problem with skype on 9/28 (2 months ago) with no solution posted.  Any suggestions?  I really need to get this up before Friday.  Thanks in advance.

Check that your Mac HD is not full, and that the software you are downloading is for the same Mac OS version.

Assuming your OS is 10.3.9 or superior, of course, since Skype does not work on 10.2.x.

The "Mounting Failed" error is usually called by an incomplete DMG file i.e. the file stopped dopwnloading before it was complete.
n any case your best bet is to re-download the file and try again.

Unfortunately, Skype will not run on a G3. From the Mac download page:

System requirements
* Mac computer with G4 800 Mhz processor or faster.
* Mac OS X v10.3.9 Panther or later.
* For higher-resolution video a faster processor (Core 2 Duo) and a broadband connection with at least 384kbps upload speeds.
* 512 MB RAM.
* 40 MB free disk space on your hard drive.
* Microphone and speakers or headset.
* Download drivers for your webcam.
* Internet connection (broadband is best, GPRS is not supported for voice calls, and results may vary on a satellite connection).

What is the OS of your computer? If you are using Windows Vista, you need to disable the "User Account Control" on your computer when you are installing VLC or Skype.

What is the exact error message that you are getting on the computer?

You most likely have a faulty hard drive. Test it with hdtune http://www.hdtune.com/download.html if it fails, get a new hard drive.

I tried downloading Yahoo Version 10 and I got the message "This application has failed to start because d3d9.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem". I tried re starting...

It seems you are installing the Yahoo messenger using the Offline Installer. Don't just reinstall it, but uninstall the whole yahoo messenger packages, even from the registry and reinstall it after your computer is restarted.

First uninstall the yahoo messenger and then download and run this program (click here). Open the link, click the "Download Now" button, wait for about 20 seconds while the countdown timer runs, and then click "Download Now File" link once the countdown timer resets to 0. After it's downloaded and installed, close all the applications, open the program and click "Run Cleaner" and proceed forward by pressing yes (if you are asked), wait for few seconds and after it's done, click "Registry" on the left pane with blue icon. Now on the right pane, click "Scan for issues" then wait for another few minutes/seconds until the scanning progress reaches 100%, the click "Fix Selected Issues" > "No" > "Fix all selected issues" > "Ok" > "Close". After it's done, restart your computer and install the yahoomessenger (download yahoo messenger online isntaller) That should fix your problem with the yahoo messenger. If you need further help, let me know.

Good luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Downloaded yahoo mess seems to have installed ok but wont start " cannot load resource dll "

Sounds like a registry problem resulting from a glitch during the installation of new software
The problem is probably due to a mal-function of the uninstall software. The Yahoo Messenger uninstall software is notorious for leaving files and fragments behind creating conflicts with the incoming software, if you failed to clean up the C drive after the uninstall some of the old software has been overwritten by the new.
Close all other programs while uninstalling, downloading and uploading
Save your Profile folder to CD if you wish to retain your Message Archives
Download Revo - double click on Yahoo Messenger - Use the 'Advanced' mode - Revo will make a Restore Point and then uninstall Messenger using the Messenger uninstall software.
It will then scan your C drive and Registry for all fragments and files that failed to uninstall.
Delete everything it finds

Download 'ccleaner' and run it through a couple of times, using the factory settings and the 'Run Cleaner' control until 0 byts have been seen to be cleaned following a scan
Run the 'Registry' from the left hand toolbar but 'Save' any changes before repairing

I have updated version friend cant access new version and opens my messages and their version crashes how do i change mine back to old version or what can i send them for a new one link

You need the following OS to support Messenger
Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista / XP64 / Vista64 / Windows7
If that is not an issue read on.

The problem is probably due to a mal-function of the uninstall software. The Yahoo Messenger uninstall software is notorious for leaving files and fragments behind creating conflicts with the incoming software
Close all programs when uninstalling / downloading and uploading.
If you tried to uninstall the old Yahoo Messenger program from the Control Panel and failed to back it up with a visit to the 'C' drive, you may have old software conflicting with the incoming software trying to share the same folder.
If you have Vista the whole Messenger folder should have been removed during the uninstall.
Check
Start > Computer >> Local drive (C) >> Program Files >> Yahoo >> Messenger. - The Messenger folder should have been deleted and not seen. If the Messenger folder is still visible - delete it.

If you have a pre-Vista OS, the Messenger folder remains, and inside, only one sub-folder should be seen. This is the 'Profile' folder and contains all the message history. All other software should have been deleted.

Manually delete any other folders and files before moving on

Download 'ccleaner' and run it through a couple of times, using the factory settings and the 'Run Cleaner' control until 0 bytes are seen to be cleaned following a scan
Run the 'Registry' from the left hand toolbar but 'Save' any changes before repairing
