Keep getting err 05 stating that the flash is obstructed

Flash is not obstructed but it keeps telling me it is and will not work

Does the flash pop up?
Try this in a dark room with the setting on automatic.
If it does NOT pop up, the problem is that the flash is stuck in some way. Try gently prying it up if you can. if not, take it into a camera repair shop to get it fixed.

I have an err 05 with my Canon 7D

The err code 05 says the same, Flash could not pop up. The manual says, switch off the camera and switch on again.it could be this does not change anything. Just a little more chance, when you switch off the camera and remove the battery. And while it is out, just charge the battery. When you replace the battery and the error reoccurs best guess you have to visit the Canon service centre.
Make sure there is no mechanical obstruction, that keeps the flash from popping up.

When taking pic an "err 05" (the built in flash was obstructed). On this camera eos Digital Rebel xti 400D. How do fix this?

The obstruction is often caused by the interior latch which refuses to move. If the flash cover ever opens, move the latch back and forward a few times which "sort of" re-engages it to its normal position.

Canon eso err 05 how do I fix it ?

This means a flash problem.

The reasons for it may be several ones. Let me go from the one with higher probability to the lower one.

1. Flash is stuck. It is the most comon reason, and more easiest to confirm. When pressed the shutter (or pressed the flash side button in P mode) you hears a repetetive click noise, and the flash won't pop up. If this happens, the flash is stuck.

Sometimes is solved when at the same time you press the shutter button, with the finger (or nail) you gently pull it up. Once is up, check for dirty, or any residues (such as tape glue, sand or something like that) that stucks the flash.

Some persons apply a thin layer of lubricant on the side hinges. Don't put so much lubricant or oil because will get inside the camera, and cause other problems.

2. If not click sound is heard, the either the flash actuator relay or the DC/DC board (that provides power to the flash board) or the flash board are defective. This can be confirmed only in a camera repair shop.

If you need further support, please let me know.

Best regards,

My canon eos 40D keeps playing err-05 which says pop up flash not working and to turn camera off and on again to solve problem, but nothing happens and camera will not work. what can I do?

If the camera thinks you have an external flash attached to the hot shoe it will not allow the built in flashto pop up. so you can try this...
Here's a very simple solution I found to get the flash to pop up without destroying your camera.

the person suggests using a fingernail. (s)he must have long fingernails. I had to use a piece of paper folded in half. Swipe the paper from back to front, as in, from the eyepiece side towards the lens side.

Canon Camera Rebel XTi reads error 05 and the flash will not pop up

Err 05 means: Something obstructed the built-in flash's pop-up operation. Turn off the main switch and turn it on again.

Prepare to press the flash request button with your left hand. With your right hand, position your thumb and finger to gently pry up the flash head, perhaps using fingernails. Push the button and pry. With that help, it should pop up.

I have a Canon Rebel XT and I am getting an error 05 message when taking pics indoors.

This sounds like the flash obstruction error - a fairly common issue with the Rebel XT. For some reason, the built in flash tends to get sticky if it's not used often. From what i've read, the best work around for this is to "exercise" the flash.

Basically what you do is when you press the flash button, either help it with your finger or thumbnail, close it again, re press the button, and keep doing it a few times. You'll find the flash gets less sticky.

You might also want to see if it gets caught on the Canaon nameplate as it tries to pop up. All it takes a smidge of friction to throw this error

Hi - I have a Rebel XT - and my built-in flash won't work - and i get an ERR 05 message. What can I do?

Dear joefrisco:

An ERR 05 message indicates that the camera's flash pop up mechanism has encountered a problem due to either an obstruction (such as your hand or something blocking it), a jam (impact damage), or an electrical failure.

Try the following steps, in order, to try and resolve the issue. If nothing works, the camera will have to be sent in for service (call Canon Tech Support @ 1-800-828-4040):

1. Turn the camera off. Ensure that nothing is blocking the pop
up flash. Turn your mode dial to one of the Creative Zone
modes (P, AV, TV. or M). Now turn your camera back on
and attempt to take a flash shot. You will need to manually
press the flash button to do so.

2. Turn your camera on and perform a hard reset by pressing the
MENU button, tabbing over to the Set Up 2 menu tab and
selecting the option "Clear Camera Settings / Clear All
Camera Settings" options, and then removing the camera
batteries, date/time battery, and memory card for a period
of approximately 2 minutes. Then reinstall all items, turn
your camera on, reset the date and time and perform step
number 1 above.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,
HeavyDLB

Err 05

In my case, I borrowed a camera and when I got it back, err 05 appears. I've located a bit of old orange juice which sticked one of the sensors - you can see the sensors when flash is popped out.

Rebel XT error 05

I had the same err 05 problem on my canon 350d. But there was no need to remove or open anything! If you have the camera in front of you looking at the lens, you can see a tiny black switch hidden under the flash. On the right side where the flash is attached to the body you can find a fine black piece of plastic sticking out of the camera body (smaller than 2mm. This switch can easily get stuck with some dust (or a grain of sand in my case)
Carefully clean it (with an ear stick) so it can go up down again as the flash goes open or is closed. (It somehow serves as a mechanical sensor)
This solved my error 05. Remember that this is just a general Flash error indication and there could be another problem triggering the warning.
