Question about Canon PIXMA MX310 All-In-One Printer

10 Answers

Canon Pixma MX310 won't scan or print

I unpacked my new printer today and I've tried everything I can think of, such USB cable works, it's connected to computer, power is on, software from Canon is installed, ink installed, removed all packaging tape etc. I use the installed MP Navigator EX 1.0 and I don't use it as a fax.
Problems:
(1) Won't scan a single sheet from glass platen. When I hit the scan button on the printer, all I get is fast multiple beeps, but no other action. Seems something should happen.
(2) Won't scan multiple copies (using ADF). I get a message that says "The scanner is not available while in use by another application or user. Code: 2,119,0" I am not aware of any other program running!
(3)When I use Canon's "My Printer" to start printing, it won't print. I get a message that says "The printer is performing another operation." I am not running anoything else; nothing is in the print queue.

I'm baffled, and I might just go back to Future Shop for a refund.

I hope a guru can help me; it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I forgot to mention that along with the packaging tape, I did take off a white platic locking tab inside that held the ink carriages in place. That's the only locking tab I could find. And, ALL the buttons on the printer panel make that multiple beeping sound when hit. So I am still hoping. :)

  • livfree Nov 18, 2008

I'd like to give it a further try before sending back to vendor.

  • livfree Nov 18, 2008

With the software supplied by Canon (and I installed the complete 2 CDs, it won't even let me scan from the computer. It actually starts scanning (well, let's say the scan light doesn't come on) and then before the progress bar even has 1 percent or less, that original message comes up.

  • livfree Nov 19, 2008

I got another new printer (same model) from the vendor, and it has the same problem! Gives all quick multiple beeps from all the panel keys when I touch them. And then when I try to scan from the computer I still get the famous message "The scanner is not available while in use by another application or user. Code: 2,119,0" And I'm not using another application. I installed from Canon's 2 supplied CDs. I still need a guru. My old HP installed immediately without problems on my laptop.

  • livfree Nov 19, 2008

I am unable to find a Live Chat for Canon and their products bought in Canada. Maybe someone has the URL.

  • livfree Nov 19, 2008

I still need help! Is it my laptop? Should I try to install the printer software on another computer and see if I get the same errors?

  • livfree Nov 19, 2008

You got it right: temperamental indeed! And it's driving me mental. :) I get the error message when I try to scan by using the software installed on my computer. I only touched the panel buttons to see if something would move or "do something." :)

  • livfree Nov 19, 2008

This is the error message after printer tries to scan from computer.

  • livfree Nov 19, 2008

No, I can't scan with the Canon software installed (from 2 CDs). But it's connected because it gives a disconnect message when I remove the USB cable.
And the downloaded Drivers (URL below) don't change anything.
    http://www.canon.ca/product_reg.asp?lng=...

  • livfree Nov 19, 2008

No luck yet. There has to be a simple thing I'm doing wrong. :(

  • livfree Nov 19, 2008

I did what dahaka said, but still get the same ugly message. I will be forced to buy an HP, I think. I'm convinced it's Canon's software. The printer is connected because when I try to scan, and purposely don't put a document in the ADF folder to scan, a message comes up saying "No doc in the ADF. Load doc and then retry." When I put a doc in to scan, I get the infamous message!!

  • livfree Nov 23, 2008

Solved, and maybe this will help some frustradted buyer of this Canon printer. I asked Future Shop (the vendor) to show me how the printer/scanner works. They did, and it worked perfectly. The problem: I had connected the USB cable before installing the software! So what I had to do was uninstall all provided software. Then I connected the power and turned on the printer. I installed the software from the CDs (can be from the internet). When this was all accomplished, I then connected the USB cable! And it worked like a charm. Why didn't Canon say that in PLAIN words in their manual? And their two CDs had confusing messages, such as indicating that it was necessary to install CD #2, when it really wasn't necessary unless you wanted the OCR program. Thanks to the gurus for their suggestions.

Try unplugging it for a little bit then plug it back in and try again if this doesn't work then do a fresh install

Okay, reading all the comments, and of course, your steps to the installation, it sounds like you have done everything perfectly. Printers/scanners/all-in-ones are very temperamental machines. You may need to leave it alone for a day or so and retry.

In the meantime:
Don't scan or print from the scanner buttons. Use only the software installed onto the computer. I can't see a part where you said this method did not work. So do this and do not worry about the buttons on the machine.

Tell me if you are able to use the software package for the scanner/printer/etc. with the computer. Let's go from there.

Hi

  • The entire mechanism (mirrors, lens, filter and CCD array) make up the scan head. The scan head is moved slowly across the document by a belt that is attached to a stepper motor. The scan head is attached to a stabilizer bar to ensure that there is no wobble or deviation in the pass. Pass means that the scan head has completed a single complete scan of the document.

Isolate the unit : Perform a Copy (standalone)

Reboot computer, Do a scan from the computer. If successful, the issue starts if you use the scan button on the printer, the Canon software can't handle the communication and cause the lock up (the program is busy error).

Re-install the whole software package.

It seems that printer might have some problem, it is better to go to vendor and get demonstration of each feature of the printer or call a representative of the vendor for technical assistance.

Before being able to scan you need to install the software properly.

Unplug printer usb and reinstall software from printer disk.

Some All in one also have a tiny lock to prevent damage to scanner lamp
during transport, check on printer quickstart guide if this is the case.

Unplug printer USB, with USB unplugged insert printer disk.

Ensure that Printer software is installed completely, if not you get malfunctions.

When installing software ensure that you are logged in as administrator, otherwise software won't complete the installation.

If you use Vista, on a Security suite like Norton, ensure that you authorize all changes to the system when installing printer, just say OK or Allow Change when asked.

If it still does not work, then there may be a fault, in this case call the dealer and ask clarification and terms for refund.

That is becose you messed up the software by performing installation after connecting the printer.

Windows installed his default driver and evidently this is not managing the scanner as it should.

You need to roll back drivers and install them properly from disk.

You need to do the following.

    Unplug printer USB.
Do a system restore to one day before you connected printer for first time.
    Restart computer
With USB NOT Plugged, start software setup.
Plug back the printer only when explicitly asked by software setup wizard.
Complete software setup installing all software.

Here is how to do system restore:

How to perform System Restore on Windows XP.

    On Vista:

Open System Restore by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking System Restore.‍ If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Hi,

Might there be locking tabs or levers underneath. these are meant to keep the mechnism in place while in transit. Pls check and unlock.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

    Appreciate the quick postback.

Lets try doing the install again. Pls un-install the softwares pertaining to the printer in your computer. Likewise, remove all the connections of the printer, USB and unplug from the wall. Reboot the system. Soon as Windows is running, confirm that the printer is no longer mentioned in your computer. Temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall. Pop in the printer installer CD again and run the installation program. Do not connect the printer unless instructed by the installer. Pls follow closely on screen instructions.

Upon installation (or re-installation), some installer programs checks the internet for updates. If your antivirus and/or firewall would prevent this specialized update/downloads, then the installation would freeze at a certain point. All the other drivers/programs would have finished their job and everything seems well. However, errors would show when trying to use the device since it is still running its unfinished (and never will be finished) update check/download.

Pls try a re-instal with Temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall. Pop in the printer installer CD again and run the installation program.

Congratulations, what is important is that your printer is working. Though if you had the chance to read my post Nov. 18, "Do not connect the printer unless instructed by the installer.", then the issue would have been resolved a little bit sooner.

Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and when the CD software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud

Scanning error - cannot scan error code 2,155,0 ???

Hi
I had the same problem, at first I thought that it was the original drivers (the ones I got with the printer) so I donwloaded the drivers from the canon website, this did not resolve the problem. What I also tried and it worked for me was connecting the printer to the computer with it's original usb cable. I bought a couple of weekes ago a usb extension cable (about 5 m long). With this extension cable I can print but I can't scan any document, it just gives me the same error. Hope this works also for you.
Bye
PS: My printer is a Canon Pixma MP190
