The issue can occur if the battery does not work properly or the problem might be even with the hard disk.

SOURCE: I need Network Controller and
Go to Gateway.com and in the search type in 450ROG. At the top of the list you will see Gateway 450ROG, click on it. Now click on software information and then Windows XP. You should now see a list of software drives. A little better than halfway down the list you will see Network - Intel PRO/100 V..... click on this. You will now see how to install this driver from you system disk (provided with the laptop).
If you do not have the disk, then follow the link below directly to intels web site for download. The reason I posted the link, finding it was a lot more steps than I would like to type up here.

Please find drivers at following link:
http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?partNumber=5377
Please select Operating system (example xp home edition 32 bit or xp pro 32 bit or 64 bit) from the dropdown list for operating system.
Then download and install all the drivers one by one.
