    Hi Mariglens284,

When did you start getting this problem, is this the first time? Is this a new hard drive? Does the BIOS see your hard drive?

Normally this is an indication of a failing hard drive.

Hi

You don't say which Operating System you use, so my answer will be presented in general, Windows XP terms that match the computer's original specifications. If yours is a non-Windows Operating System and my answer seems to be of some relevance to you, please consider applying the logic and principles involved here to your own Operating System and, if in doubt, please feel free to add a Comment or Clarification to this Question. Please include information about the Operating System. Doing so helps us makes faster, more accurate and more assured Remote Diagnostics leading to better quality and more useful Advice, Answers, Guidelines , How-Tos and Solutions.

This fault can have several causes.

This could be a minor Bios Settings issue, such as a flat CMOS Battery (which can easily be replaced), an incorrect IDE/RAID Setting or an incorrect Hard Drive Sequence or Boot Device Setting. All of these can be rest by pressing F2 and entering into BIOS Setup. However, inexperienced users must tread cautiously in BIOS Setup, as certain settings changes in there can make it impossible for the computer to boot at all.

Alternatively, it might be a more serious matter such as a BIOS Corruption, a Boot Sector Virus or an Operating System Corruption.

If pressing F1 does not allow the system to Boot, then you should desist from pressing it as this can lead to damage to the hard drive.

If it is not a BIOS settings problem, try pressing the function key that gives you a Boot Menu (often F3, F4, F5, F6, F7, F8 or F9) and which allows you to Boot into Safe Mode. If this is successful:

Select Boot in Safe Mode with Networking > Enter > Start > All Programs > Accessories> System Tools > System Restore > Restore My Computer to an Earlier Time > Select a Highlighted Date in the Calendar on the left and an Event in the Schedule on the right that both precede the fault > Restore > Restart the computer.

If this does not resolve the problem, Boot in Safe Mode With Networking again, then log onto the internet and download Malware bytes from www.malwarebytes.org, and scan and purge any infection found.

If this does not resolve the problem, you will need to attempt a Repair Re-installation of Windows XP, keeping the same files and settings as previously, by booting from a bootable Operating System disc and then selecting the (2nd) repair Option (immediately after the F8 Agreement Screen).

If no 2nd Repair Option is available, you will need to back up any important data from the hard drive to another computer or an external storage device and do a complete fresh installation of the Operating System, Drivers, Utilities, Applications and Security Programs.

I hope this helps.

I have dell optiplex 330 when i start it it need to strike f1 for boot f2 for setup and f5 for scanning

Hi,
There could be two reasons you are getting this error message .
1. The operating system has crashed and needs to be reinstalled
2. The HDD has gone bad.

Run the diagostics on the computer.

Restart your computer at the Dell logo , tap on the f12 key slowly 1-3 times.
Using your down arrow key on the keyboard highlight IDE drive diagnostics or HDD diagnostics.
Press enter .
Incase there is an error , the hard drive needs to be replaced , else the operating the system needs to be repaired or reinstalled .

Heloo sir i have a problem with my dell 170l when i start it it shows ''strike F1 to continue, F2 to run the setup utility'' when i click f1 it show ''f1 to retry boot,f2 for setup utility'' plz help me...

Hit F2,look in setup to see if the hard drive is recognized and check that the date and time are correct.
Then hit esc key. it will ask if you want to save changes, click yes. It should boot and probably ask you to hit F1 or F2 again., unless there is a problem with the CMOS battery, which may need to be replaced.
If you hit F1 to continue, it will boot, but your time and date will be off.

If it is not keeping time then you need to replace the computers clock battery. The battery is a cr2032 battery usually.
follow the below link for instructions on how to do that.

Generally an indication that the Hard Drive isn't detected
Things to check, go to BIOS F2, reset defaults and reboot, see if the HDD is seen. If it is, the battery on the motherboard is likely dead and needs replacement (Watch battery at Walmart, 3 dollars)
If the HDD doesn't detect after resetting the BIOS, then most likely a Hard Drive failure
