In circuit remote sensor is broken

Give proper answer

I tested the remote control (digital camera picks up it's light if it works - and it did, so it does work). Now the only problem left is the remote sensor in the tv itself - where is it located, so I can access it to clean it or replace it??? I'm pretty handy with electronics, and I would really like to fix this myself - I don't want to take a $50 tv to a repair shop and pay $200 fix it...
It's my mother's tv, and she's in her 70's - I don't want her having to get up and turn it on/off or change volume manually! Please help!

Do you mean the infra red receiver is not working?? but first you should determine if the remote control is working correctly. If you take it to an technician he would be able to tell you if it is ok.

Or do you mean the infra red transmitter diode in the remote control is broken??

IT IS VERY SIMPLE TO CHECK THE REMOTE CONTROL FIRST . WHAT YOU NEED IS A RADIO THAT HAS AM BAND ,TUNE IT TO ANY AM STATION THEN HOLD THE REMOTE CONTROL CLOSE TO IT AND PRESS ANY BUTTON IT SHOULD MAKE THE RADIO SOUND DISTORTED EXAMPLE (TA TA TA) IF THAT HAPPENS THE CONTROL IS WORKING . IF NOT THE R.C. IS DEAD . PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS AFTER U PERFORM THIS TEST

Can someone help me with my TV?

Helllo
Read your detailed description, and I've the opinion that everyone posts a problem with Fixya, Must see this, and understand how to place ones' problem to experts who works with Fixya. I should appreciate you.

There are two reasons for the problem you faces with this fault. The first one is with the remote control itself. as it may be very old [if it is the original remote control to this set], more than 7 years, according to you,
it must be checked for its infrared signal emission. I'll give you a link that will help you in this matter, after I've posted this solution to you. You can understand how te remote control functions, and what is the way to make it right again [if can], from that link.
Second cause will be to the infrared remote sensor, which can be located just behind the infrared sensor window at the front of the TV. It will be a three terminal component, will be diretly soldered to the circuit board. I hereby post pictures of it, for your information. The device may vary in size and shape, but will have almost the same structure.
This component can be bought from most of the electronic sparepart shops at your town. It won't cost more. see the component. Will look like somewhat brownish black in color. If the remote controls' out signals are OK, the fault will be of this remote sensor, Its system control IC sill be OK; as you see picture with proper color.
See the pictures of the remote sensors.

Check the link that I'm going to post in the comment box and try to understand, what a remote control handset, how it works, and fautlts and reepair to it, from that link.2_10_2012_1_45_31_pm.jpg

I have an older toshiba t.v. model 32AF45. the remote does not work and i cant get any other remotes to work on it either. the picture is kinda dark. is there a way to access the menu without it?

Hello
The remote sensor inside your TV is not working. It does not receiving infrared signal generated by your remote control. There are two main reasons for this problem. The first one is the defective infrarred sensor itself. The second one is, there is not sufficiant voltage to the remote sensor to work properly. The remote sensor can be located just behind the infrared sensor window at the front of the Tv. It will be diretly soldered to the front panel control printed circuit board. It is a thhree terminal component, look brownish black in colour, very cheap to buy, and can be bought from most of the electronic spare part shops at your town. It will look somewhat like this.10_23_2011_3_43_31_am.jpgThere will be typical number printed on its body, and it should be noted when buying a new one. You must ahve a concept of desoldering and soldering, some skill to repair elactronic ciruit boards to replace it by yourself. As far as your sectond complaint is cncerned, lack of brightness, may be of so many reasons. As you know, a TV is composed of hunderes or thousands of small components, and each of them have their own "duty" while the set works. If any one amouhg them have a fault, it will effect the whole working of a TV. Typically, a dark picture may be of ow screen voltage. Screen voltage can be adjusted, and there are adjustment points for screen and sub-brightness. But this is a very skilled work, and and unexpereienced one can't do, and is dangerous. OK.10_23_2011_3_44_44_am.jpg

Remote control won't work

First, to identify the source of the problem is to check first the remote control. Try to dismantle your remote and try to observe the battery terminals, it has two battery terminals that is connected in the pcb it is the negative and the positive, try check the lead or the solder if properly connected then if the battery terminal is connected properly and no loosed solder, try to assemble your remote. Second, is the IR led sensor you must have a cellphone with a camera or a digicam point the sensor of your remote to the camera lens and press all the buttons try to look at the lcd while pressing the button you will see a red light, that indicates that your remote is working. if you are not seeing a red light try to replace the sensor but before pulling out the sensor you should observe the proper position.

What is a bad remote sensor

Hello
In all remote controlled optioned TVs have an internal circut section and a remotes sensor inside the front panel boad of that TV. The remote control hanset produces infrared rays of differnt frequencies, as we push each of its buttons. The frequency will be entirely different to one an other.
Infrared invisible rays are generated by an LED[ Light Emitting Diode], which fitted on the front side or the remote control hanset, and is directed to the infrared sensor window at the front pannel of the Tv, and will fall onto the infrared sensor inside it, and that sensor will convert these signals to digital format and gives it to the system control Ic to process.
The infrared sensor is a 3 leged element, which can be located inside the front panel of your TV, just back to the infrared window. It may get damaged, or may not get proper volttage. It shuld be replaced, if damaged, or find out the reson for the voltage drop, or no voltage condition.
Normally infrared failure is common. It is not so costly as you think, here in India we can get for about Rs25/= comes about 1/2 US Dollar. Ok.

My television no longer accepts commands from the remote control. I have verified that the remote control works properly. Please advise.

Since remote control is verified so next thing involved in remote operation is remote sensor located on front of tv that receives remote signals.
Remote sensor seems defective in your tv and need to be replaced to solve remote issue.
Call local tv repairman if you have no experience of soldering parts in circuit board.
Thanks.

REMOTE CENSOR

I assume you are speaking of the sensor (on the TV) which picks up the remote box commands, or the infrared LED (on the remote) which transmits the commands. Which ever the case, it sounds like a broken & intermittent solder connection where the device solders onto the circuit board. Most of problem I've seen is the remote box end of things.

You will need a solder iron, solder, and a little soldering expertise to fix this. The remote box might have one or two screws, otherwise the case is usually a snap together, and sometimes frustrating to get apart.

If the TV end of things, then you must unplug the set, take the back cover, and carefully remove the main chassis, and note where the sensor is.

Hope this helps!

On / off

I suggest you to take out the remote control batteries to discard that as the problem.

Try working the TV without remote controller to see all the functions working and if everything works ok without the remote then you may have a broken remote controller.

As I can conclude with your pretty small description, you may have some remote buttons stuck and maybe humidity or plain fluids into the remote controller circuits causing false button activations in buttons like the ON/OFF, or PIP, or RECALL.

You can try open the remote and clean any dirt and humidity inside, specially taking care of the rubber buttons pad and its black touch pads behind each button. also the circuit board and the golden/black threads where the pads touch the board.

Also if you note a broken battery, clean any battery fluids inside the remote as these liquids are very corrosive for the circuits.

Good Luck...
