Hi, What camera is this? It would be better for us to know to be specific.
Did you try a firmware update ?
Also when kept in autofocus mode, try to force the lens little bit (gently) to zoom.
If it still doesnt work, you many have to find out in the menu settings. But to better help with it, we need to know what brand and model camera you have.

Try the lens on a different compatible camera and see if it works there. If it does, it could be that the lens you are using in incompatible with your camera. (Check your user manual for a list of compatible lenses)

However, if it does not work on the other camera as well, it could be that the lens itself is faulty, and would need to be serviced/repaired.

Since you say that other lenses work, I do not think its a fault with the camera, but either with the compatibility or circuitry of the lens in question.

Hope that helps!

Do replace your camera battries because lense need more power to move. otherwise the two possibilities are there.
either zoom lense gear damaged or circuitry problem.

Try blowing canned air on the lens.

The camera is probably faulty.

Call the phone number listed on the owner manual, and get a quote for repair, or even better for a guaranty extension that will cover the repairs for one year.

Maybe a long shot but make sure custom menu for the AE-L/AF-L button has not been set to option "5" ON. If it is the camera will only Autofcus via this button [ AE-L/AF-L].

If you have done a camera reset it won`t be this.

Sir did you try to remove the batteries and see the settings on it? if all the possibilities didnt work on your camera then you must send it for repair service. they will open the case of your camera and fix the lens or maybe they will replace a new lens for that. if repairing this will cost you alot then you should buy a new one. if its under warranty then used it for your benefits.

thank you for using fixya

Won't auto focus

Make sure the auto-manual focus switch on your camera is set to auto (A) and also make sure the auto manual focus selector on the lens is in auto (A) as well. If your lens contacts are dirty then this will affect the function of the lens as well. Clean those with either a lint free type cloth and alcohol or methylated spirits.

This to me is a connection problem and may only require moving the AF-MF button back and forth a few times or removing the lens and cleaning the contacts between the lens and camera body.
Generally the "L" series lenses are pretty resilient in construction of offer the user few problems.
The lens contacts can be cleaned with a soft red rubber pencil eraser where you lightly polish the contact area of the gold contacts. Clean away any rubber dust with a lens cloth not a tissue, be extra careful not to get dust into the camera body cavity. reassemble the lens and try the camera lens operation

'Error 99' indicates some problem with the AF contacts. This is a common error in Canon lenses. It could indicate a very simple problem like dirty contacts or a much serious one like the breakage of USM cable.
As a first step, you can try cleaning the lens and body contacts (the metal contacts between the lens and body) using a pencil eraser. Be careful to hold the body facing down so that no dust falls inside. After cleaning both the lens and the body contacts, re-attach the lens and try shooting. If the AF does not work still, you need to take the lens to an authorized service center.
For the jerky focusing ring, you need to get the lens serviced by an authorized service center.

Auto focus stopped working

Try cleaning the contacts on the camera and the lens, this is what usually prevents AF from working correctly.

It sounds like the circuit board flex has gone bad, It folds back and forth when you zoom the lens, And needs to be replaced by a repair shop and readjusted. Tony

Nikon D50 with Nikon DX 18-55 lens will not focus

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your lens. If you are able to autofocus and take pictures with any other lens, then it means that your problem lies with the kit lens. If you can take picture in manual mode, but not in autofocus mode, then the AF motor in the lens in not functioning. I had the same thing happen to my 50mm 1.4 lens.

Depending on your location, there are Nikon repair centers in Melville, NY and Torrance, CA.
Hope this helps,
Andrew

My lens quit auto focusing

It's probably broke then. Clean the contacts to the camera and try again. If it still don't work you can probably be sure it is likely to be a bit faulty. Check the camera has auto focus mode enabled if appropriate.
