I had the same the same issue with my roller ball and found out that some how i got oil or some grease on the ball itself. the way i fixed was i "aggressively" wiped the face of the phone back and forth on a cloth and it dried it up. the roller ball worked perfectly after that. it sounds rough or crude but it works.

How to fix a faulty Blackberry rollerball/trackball

There are a few relatively simple solutions to fixing a faulty Blackberry rollerball/trackball.

Compressed Air

Spraying some compressed air on the ball and round the sides of the ball can sometimes loosen the compacted dirt & dust on the rolling mechanism.

You can pick up compressed air from your local hardware store.

WD40

Spray a tiny amount of WD40 on a cotton bud and rub it onto the rollerball. This can free up the mechanism and lubricate it.

Removing and Cleaning the Rollerball/Trackball

  1. Using a small flathead screw driver gently prise the silver ring around the rollerball from the top (be extremely careful as the catches are made of plastic and can break easily)
  2. The rollerball module should come out with easy
  3. Using a clean paint brush, gently brush the inside of the Blackberry where the module came from
  4. Using a toothbrush clean the rollerball module gently around the rollers on the underside and also clean the actual rollerball
  5. When replacing the rollerball module it will only fit one way so don't worry about putting it in upside down
  6. There are three plastic catches on the silver ring, there should be one at the bottom & two at the top. Line them up on the phone and press it back in place gently.

Replacing the rollerball/trackball

Sometimes the mechanism or the rollerball can be come damaged and cleaning will not solve the problem. In this case you can replace the rollerball by following the instructions above about cleaning and purchase a replacement rollerball from eBay or one of the other countless online stores that see Blackberry parts.

I would always recommend that you buy genuine Blackberry replacement parts as these are usually of a higher quality than copies.

My rollerball won't click.

I'm having the same problem with this. One of my friends and a Att worker have suggested that replacing the Rollerball with a new one which can be bought off Ebay for 5 or 6 bucks can fix the problem. If that does't work then check to see if water damage has taken place, if any moisture has gotten to the phone it may be that. Other then replacing the rollerball i have no other solution.

The rollerball on my blackberry pearl does not move down only up

Your rollerball needs a clean.

The silver ring which covers the trackball can easily be removed if you use a small screwdriver to lift it at the outer side of the ring. Be careful here! Like you should be during the whole process as all parts have very small plastic nipple which can break very easy. When the silver plastic ring is removed you will see the inner trackball component which can be removed completely. Before doing this you should carefully remove the silver metal ring that holds the trackball component in its position. The trackball component itself can also be carved. For every direction the ball can roll to you’ll find a sensor wheel. Those wheels are mostly carrying some gunk you should clean them from. Once this is done put everything back together to the place the pieces came from and secure the trackball with the silver plastic ring you removed in the first step. Your BlackBerry’s trackball should be back working now.

There are pictures of how to do this on "other" forums.

Rollerball not working

RIM will admit, its a known issue with the blackberry 8100...it was the first blackberry with a front trackball and so there is a design flaw that dust will get in here and prevent the magnets from moving around inside.

the little silver rim is acutally designed to be taken off so you can clean inside. take an embrodery needle, and put it under the silver rim by the TY button on the keypad....once this pops off, there is the ball and there are 2 more silver rims inside along with 4 magnets. remember how you take this apart, cause if you dont, then this will void any warrenty your phone might have.

in order to clean this, soak the ball in rubbing alchohol and take a cotten ended Q-tip with rubbing alchohol and damp it a little bit and clean it real well.....its also nice preventative doing this regularly...,. (not taking the ball out, but just cleaning the rim and ball about once every other day or so....)
