DPS 336AP Hi, I noticed your post about the DPS-336AP PSU (for the LVM 37W1 I'm guessing). I'm currently fixing my westinghouse and no longer have my old psu as a reference. Would you be kind enough to send me some photos of the connectors/pin descriptions? I appreciate any help you can provide. My email is [email protected]. Thanks, Alex

I did take a few photos but just to help me get the connectors and covers back into place. I deleted them soon after but I would suggest this prior to removing them as they are tiny, etc. but you already know this. My TV has never had that problem again and I am very proud to have fixed it. It easily saved me a $450 repair bill, or worse, I new 37-inch at over $1000 I am sure for a 1080p.

If you getting a lot of vertical lines, double picture, it can be the LCD panel driver board, or worst case will be the LCD panel, very expensive.

Hello, this model has two ribon cables that run from the t_con board to the panel, it sounds like you might have to replace one of them if not the whole t_con board. You can find parts for this at www.shopjimmy.com, I would recommend you taking this unit to a certified repair center if you are not atleast a bit technical because you have to did a bit deep in to the set for this one.

SOURCE: Westinghouse LVM 37w1 Screen goes

Plasma and LCD TV sets are prone to having capacitors in the power supply section fail. This is the most likely cause for the probem you describe. When capacitors fail your will commonly see one or more of the following symptoms.

  • No video, Power light is on or blinking.
  • TV is making a clicking noise.
  • TV takes a while to come on
  • Screen is very dim or flickers.

Again, You can get a power supply repair kit with the parts, detailed instructions, and support from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com . Or just click here to see more details on their kit.

Here are pictures of capacitors...Notice that the ones below look bloated. They have failed and will need to be repalced.

LVM-37w1 after 5 minutes of viewing, picture and sound go off. Blue power light turns orange. attempts to turn on TV are unsuccessful. Blue light immediately turns orange.

I saw this fix posted on another blog by a fellow named Patrick. I tried it today and it it worked. It fixed my Westinghouse lvm-37w1. Basically disassemble the back of the TV (removing all the screws on the edges and middle). Remove screws holding bottom speaker and stand. There are 2 chrome rods extending down. There are small screws inside holding them on. You can turn the rods and unscrew the screws but need a small screw driver to put them back on. Remove the black cover on the back. remove the plates on the lower middle section. You will expose a printed circuit card. unplug wires and unscrew 4 screws holding it in. Remove it, turn it upside down and inspect the solder joints near the lower middle (especially under the gray relay on the other side). I found 4 solder joints that were cracked. Resolder the larger solder joints that are cracked or look bad (small solder joints are too delicate). Put it back to gether and it should work now. Mine works great. No more black screen with no sound.12_2_2011_5_11_21_am.jpg

Picture turns off after 1 second. Power supply appears to on.

morrfl, All lcd tv's (plasma & fluorescent lamp backlighted) have "smart" power supplys (ac line to dc) that are called "switch-mode-power-supplys" that can detect FAULTS with other circuits or with themselves and will go into what is known as SHUTDOWN-MODE when a FAULT CONDITION is detected. The SMPS does this to protect against having a catastrophic nonrecoverable failure! e.g. sparks, smoke, fire. There are many reasons that LCD tv's go into shutdown! However, your set is a viable candidate for repair. When you stated "picture turns off after 1 second" means it still has the capability of displaying information on the LCD panel! But don't do anything just yet about fixing it. Check the availibility of a replacement SMPS number DPS-336AP. The drop-in SMPS could have same problem as the current one because nobody has made the determination of the ROOT CAUSE of failure for this SMPS. All they know is that they fail!! You will need to read all the posts here on fixya and elsewhere to maybe???? find out ROOT CAUSE and exactly what component(s) fail and more importantly WHY! It is now 2009 and these LVM-37W1 units have been failing by the hundreds because of SMPS failures since 2007 or 8 ! Yet nobody has investigated to COMPONENT LEVEL why the SMPS fails. Well, all I can say is good luck guy. If you do manage to get it up and running again I would certainly like to hear back from you. try me at [email protected] or here on fixya. I'm 12fixlouie. Hope this was of some use! If yes please rate on fixya.

I will pay for the fix for the DPS-336AP PS Board

At board level, replacement of power supply is not a big work. But the main is what caused problem:
- by itself (regarding to quality and design of PS)
- by loads at its output broken.
Therefore, we should check and fix the loads causing problem for PS unit before proceeding to replace PS.

DPS-336AP Replacement

Brad,

I was going to post later this week but I have been running perfect, without any problems at all for over 6 days now! I just went in and replaced the DSP-336AP. I took digital photo's once I pulled the back off to be sure all connectors went back on and I was careful not to touch any other wiring. You will need to also pull of the power cable connector in order to pull off the power supply cover as well as it slides out and the power connect thing blocks it. I did see that although the revision of the DPS-336AP was exactly the same as the newly purchased one, the serial number of the one I purchased on eBay was a few hundred newer or higher. I was hoping that it was a new rev and hoped that Westinghouse fixed the problem. Nonetheless, all is working perfectly once again. I paid about $150 for that DPS-336AP on eBay and there were only two sellers on eBay offering this board. Good luck and please take the time to update me as well. I suspect W sold a few thousand of these TV's and you and I will be the only ones who fixed them ourselves. Anyway, good luck to you!!!!!!!

It is worth fixing but you have to replace the power supply. It is a fairly common problem with the Westinghouse units.
