GE Convection/Microwave Oven (JVM190K0001)Microwave doesn't heat

O.K., the convection side works great, the microwave light comes on and sound seems normal as I remember but there is absolutely no heating. I've checked fuses and looked for bad wiring but that's as far as I can go without help.
I'd like to keep and repair this unit if possible since it can sometimes be a problem finding a new built-in with same outside dimensions. This model was build in 12/92. I'm guessing the 'tube' has finally failed. If this is the case, would a new part be difficult to replace? Is this an expensive part and would it still be available for this unit? Appreciate any help I can get since I'm all thumbs at this kind of thing but calling in a service guy is scary$$$$$$!

The part may be difficult to replace but I still don't know what kind of part we're talking about for sure. More info please?

Thanks. I was afraid that this was going to be the answer to my problem.

Ok, if your microwave is running but not heating, it could be one of these:

  • Magnetron is fried. Resistance between the magnetron terminals should be less than 3 ohms. Resistance from the magnetron terminal to ground should be infinite.
  • Fried HV capacitor. Use your ohm meter to test it.
  • Fried control board. If power is going to the board but not going off to the other components, the board is bad and needs to either be replaced or track down the bad connection (GE/Hotpoints).
  • HV Rectifier is shorted or open. Test forward and reverse bias with a megohmmeter. If continuity in both directions, rectifier is shorted, replace. If no continuity in either direction, rectifier is open, replace.
However, if you are inexperienced in microwave repairs, I wouldn't recommend you trying a DIY, as there is a capacitor inside that can store upto 2000v - enough to kill- even when unplugged.

To be honest, it would really be cheaper and easier to buy a new, considering the age of your microwave. Also, finding spares for older machines is REALLY hard, and you'll almost never find a genuine and new spare for a machine that old, especially considering that a brand new unit would cost nearly the same!

Possible that the relay is faulty or there is fault on the control panel. It can also be related to problems on the thermocouple or sensors which can cut off prematurely the element.

Problem with the GE Advantium (model sca1001fss01) Convection / Microwave Oven Everything works except the microwave. It makes a sound like its working, table turns, but does not heat or cook.

sounds like the magnetron. Youll have to have a technician replace it. if you have a warranty just call the company and they should take care of you.

Convection oven problem

Most of the time the magnetron is defective if the food is not heating up.
In some cases there is a defective low power transformer or other componenents associated with the magnetron.
I would suggest to check the owners manual under the warranty section. Sometimes the magnetron has 5 years warranty.
Good Luck.
