Hardware manufactures already have paid for this license for your "on-the-shelf-dvd player". You have another option... to download a DVD Player that includes a pre-licensed decoder.

You should be able to go into power management utility whether it be sony or Windows and change the "when lid is closed" option from hibernate/shutdown to "do nothing"

I looked around trying to find a free one but I was unsuccessful. Here is a link for some products that charge. The price of this CODEC was about $15 to $20. Here is a link to some of the companies that sell them (as well as more information about this entire subject).
