Reset does not fix it. The message was generated after I had hooked up to my computer and asked for the Garmin down load.

  • Dickaa Nov 18, 2008

I tried to update a location and then tried to use Garmin again but the message comes back when I turn the unit on

Dickaa,

When you pushed the reset, was it turn on? The reset only works if power is active to the Memory.

If the unit WAS on or if you try it this way and it fails, then do the following..

Turn the unit on ..... push settings, then system and then restore. follow the prompts on the screen and this should reset the unit to factory defaults.

Hope you find this usefull

What method did you use to upgrade? I'm going to take a wild guess: web updater.

This has been the source of many similar problems and so we'll say it again: DO NOT USE WEB UPDATER FOR FIRMWARE UPGRADES.

But now that the first update has partially failed, my advice would be to obtain the latest version of web updater, which supposedly can deal with failed updates, and try again.

It seems that to solve the problem with ""New software found. The software is older than your current software. Would you like to continue installing? This will clear all user data" message.
It looks that in some of the past upgrades, u try to perform upgrade using SD card instead of the Nuvi. So u had a situation that on SD card u found GUPDATE.GCD with older creation date than on Nuvi. After u delete GUPDATE.GCD from SD (\Garmin folder) message will be disappeared.
    try this instructions.

Have you tried a master reset or updated the software?
Note: A master resetwill erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the defaultfactory settings. But who cares if you have problems, right?
  1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
  2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
  3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
  4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
    • You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
  5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
  6. Touch Yes
The device will automatically reset. Follow the onscreen prompts then place your device in an area with a clear view of the skyuntil it acquires satellites.
IF this does not work, try updating to current software and maps.

My garmin 255w nuvi keep turning off and wont turn on

It is a good idea to perform a hard reset on your Garmin Nuvi after updating the software.

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

PROBLEM DRIVERS

Go to the Holux support website at:
http://www.holux.com/JCore/en/support/downloadCenter.jsp

NOTE: All quote marks are added by me for emphasis only.

Under the "Select products Catagory" dropdown choose "GPS Receiver/Data Logger".
Under the "Select products series" dropdown choose "Mouse Type GPS Receiver" and

click on Submit. A new page opens showing various receivers. Scroll down to the GR-213u

GPS Receiver and see the one called "GR-213u Driver Program-Vista Driver". It is of a type

of file compression called "rar" which may require a unzip program. I use a free program,

"Secure Zip for Windows". Click on the little yellow box at the far right of the "GR-213u

Driver Program-Vista Driver" line. It will be labeled "9618869.rar". Save the file.
It should be found by clicking on the Vista START and then your user name & should be in

the "Downloads" folder as "9618869.rar".
Creat a new folder for the actual unzipped file by clicking on the the Vista START Icon

& then "Documents". Click on the "Organize" tab & then on the dropdown "New Folder".
Name the new folder "Holux Vista Drvr" & then open it.
Now back at the "Downloads" folder open (Unzip) the "9618869.rar" file. Copy the new

folder "GR-213u Driver Program-Vista Driver" to the "Holux Vista Drvr" folder you created

in "Documents", so that you can later delete all those files that may have built up in

"Downloads"folder from doing lots of downloading.
Open the "GR-213u Driver Program-Vista Driver" folder & see the setup file

"PL2303_Prolific_Vista_3301.exe". The size should be about 2724 KB. Open it to start the

driver install. Now you are almost done.
After Vista has done its driver install, go to "Control Panel" & open "Device Manager".

Now plug in your Holux GR-213 & the "Device Manager" should now show a new entry

called "Ports (COM & LPT). Click on the little + sign to expand it & you should see

"Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM#)". The # represents your Comm Port number

used by the Holux. Right click on "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port (COM#)" & click on

the dropdown "Properties". Click on the tab "Port Settings"at the top of the "Properties"

window. Change the value in "Bits per second" from 9600 to 4800 & click OK.
Hopefully you have installed the Holux Utility "GPS Viewer" with a shortcut on the

desktop. Open the "GPS Viewer" & click on "Scan". A new window "GPS Scanning" opens

showing GPS found at the same Comm Port # that shows in the "Device Manager". Click on

OK & the scan window closes now showing the same Comm Port#. Click on "Open GPS" &

then on "Cold Start or Warm Start" & all the satellites found should show up. You can close

the "GPS Viewer" & all the other open windows. If all went as described any software you

used with Win XP using GPS should work OK now with Vista.
Now run your software (MS S&T or whatever) & make sure its GPS Settings show the same

Comm Port# as in "GPS Viewer" & baud rate of 4800.

Is the correct software installed? Have you attempted any installations on the device and have you downloaded any 'add-ons' such as new voices, etc.
Is it new or bought used?

Does not clear prior destination

This seems to be just a software problem, re-installing the software should fix it. Before that though, try resetting user data. At user menu, press "-" zoom out and repeat button at same time. select reset user data, it will reboot automatically, then check to see if it is any better. If not, hopefully the software came with your unit and you can re-install it. Good luck and let me know if you need help with the installation. thanks, Daniel
