All you need to do is go to the device manager
uninstall the cd/dvd drive
uninstall the ide secondary as well as primary channel and make sure you unistall the secondary channel first coz normally the primary channel is ur harddrive and if u uninstall the primary first the system will hang you will have to shut the system down forcefully
than restart the system and the system will detect everything again and issue should be resolved
if no than go to the support.dell.com ... click on drivers and downloads....select the option enter ur tag... thats the service tag which is located on the back of the system its a seven digit alpha numeric code located on the white lable with barcodes ...and than select ur os by default the operating system which will be selected would be the one you got with the system... click on cd/dvd ...download the firmware which is applicable ...
you will find the model of the drive in the device manager in the cd/dvd option and after downloading it install it and than restart the system and this should resolved it ...
if that doesnt help it means the lens of the drive are weak u will have to get a new one
so if the system is under warrantty get a replacement from dell
technical number is 18006249896

IF the hard drive is a SATA hard drive, you will first of all need to download the SATA drivers for te motherboard and copy them to a Floppy drive on another computer if yours will not work, this may also affect why it is not "seeing" the Cd drive if this is a SATA one too

Try installing Windows and when the message " press F6 if you want to ...." appears, have the floppy inserted in teh floppy drive so it can find thr SATA drivers, it will then recognise the Hard drive and install

How to reinstall windows XP

If your computer boots up you should be able to reinstall with your xp os disk, click on your cd drive & choose reinstall or new install, after that you'll probably have to go to windows update & update the system, if that does'nt work you may have to go to bios settings & set the cd rom as your boot devise, restart & install that way, after your done be sure to set the bios to thier default settings.

It can either be that your bios have been configured improperly some how. Or that your hard drive has went out. You would be able to know if it is the hard drive by knowing if there has been any clicking at all. If you have then the hard drive has went out and will no longer work. If this isn't the case then for the bios all you would have to do is just reset the bios to default. If this doesn't work then you can flash them with the latest from here:http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?prodNameId=3375954&lang=en&cc=us&taskId=135&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3375952 just click on the operating system that you will be installing and then click on bios. Then follow the instructions once you have the file downloaded. If that doesn't work and it turns out you were wrong about the hard drive then you will have to replace it. And you have two options for getting a replacement. Order it directly from hp http://h20141.www2.hp.com/hpparts/default.aspx?mscssid=826D01A14EBE4CF4B6978D305A1C0FAD or find it elsewhere for much cheaper. The cheapest you can get is a 40GB drive and it is only $13.49 on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822116178 it is that cheap because it has been recertified. The largest you can get is a 1TB drive which would be virtually endless space for people that don't have a bunch of stuff as well as a slow internet connection it is only $169.99 and in my opinion I would say that is a really cheap hard drive for its size http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136545 for installing a new drive refer to hp:http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01179993/c01179993.pdf just click on replacing a hard drive to the left in the list and it will give you step by step instructions.

I just ran the recovery disks to cure a severe

Do you have separate installation driver disks for those items? If not, you can use a friends PC to go on line and download them. You can also get more information under control panel - system - hardware - device manager. The PC will show you which items are having trouble and any information it can get from the component. If it shows unidentified it is very likely the driver is not installed. But note - are you sure it was a virus and not a failing hard drive. If problems return now that you are going it is more likely the HD.

What is the largest hard drive (in GB) I can install in my Presario 5000?I'm trying to use a 160 GB drive and I can't get the OS to load on it. Any ideas on what could be the problem? Thanks!

The 106GB drive looks fine. When you installed the drive did you make sure you set up the drive and cables correctly? If this is the only drive in your system, there are two settings to check.

First the cable connecter on a ide drive should be black, not gray.

Next the drive has a set of jumper settings and it should be set as cable-select or master, not slave.

If those items are ok, then is your O/S CD a restore or a release of windows? A restore cd might be a problem if the drive is not formatted. Most O/S cds will ask if you want to format the drive and setup partitions.

If none of this works, provide more information.
if it works PLEASE LEAVE SOLUTION FEEDBACK.

Try re-installing the drivers for the drive using your driver CD that came with the laptop or visit the manufacturer's website to download the drivers for the drive, install and restart your laptop.

If it is a software problem, then this should fix it. If not, then it would be a hardware problem(your lens may be weak). You could also try using a lens cleaner to clean the lens since it might be dirty.

If not, then you would have to change your drive.

Not reading CD RW

In the device manager, delete the items that have the yellow error icon, and the cd drive. Reboot your pc, you will get a message that says found new hardware, install the drivers.

If you do not have the drivers for the devices, go to http://www.driversguide.com/ and search for the drivers, download them and then follow the instructions listed above.
