Question about Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 Digital Camera

Open Question

Panasonic TZ1 flash doesn't synchronize with shutter

After 2 years of reliable use, my TZ1 flash is out of sync with the shutter. The flash usually goes off before the shutter. If I take the same indoor shot 10 times, one may be OK. Another will be over exposed but most will be very dark or red due to the AF light since the flash usually goes off well before the shutter.

I can't find any setting that could affect this and I don't see any reset button on the camera.
I tried leaving the batteries out for 24 hours - no change. Any ideas?

Wat can I say? My flash doesn't sync exact one year after buying this lumix.
Panasonic service said; this is not a production problem.

    Seem familiar anyone???
    - November 28th. Turn on Camera, point and click as usual.
    - Flash activates, but image is dark (not synchronised with shutter)

Judging from the number of complaints on the UK, Spanish and American websites, this is a known problem (with some customers saying Panasonic will fix it for free) and needs to be addressed by Panasonic.

Panasonic... If you're listening, I bought a vacuum cleaner from you last year which died just outside of its warranty BUT YOU DIDN'T WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT...... Now its my Camera!!!

I just bought Panasonic DECT home phones without problems (yet!).

Its christmas time, I am looking to buy a Plasma screen TV, (preferably a Panasonic), however LG have made very very very good progress with electronics. AND THEY ARE MUCH CHEAPER.

Either you start fixin these defects, or we the customer WALK straight into your competitors arms! Credit crunch that!

SOURCE: Panasonic TZ1 flash problems!!

Panasonic knows about this and can fix it. It involves replacing a circuit board. I sent them my camera (Elk Grove Village, IL repair facility) at the beginning of Dec with a letter giving six web sites reporting the problem and asking them to fix it free of charge. I don't think the camera was on warranty, but I received it back, fixed, and with no charge, in about a week. Panasonic really came through on this and there is clearly no fix other than this one... except to stop trying to take flash pictures.

How do you turn the flash off so I can take pictures where a flash cannot be used?

Press Right on the cursor button (marked with the lightning bolt icon) to switch the flash setting. Your choices are AUTO, AUTO/Red-eye reduction, Forced ON, Forced ON/Red-eye reduction, Slow sync/Red-eye reduction, and Forced OFF.

Flash & shutter are not in sync

I had the same problem. I set my ISO to 800 and its seems to work fine now. Shots with and without the flash are much better.

The pictures are often too dark but sometimes too light. I have now found a work-around for this problem. It consists of doing the following:

* set the sensitivity to ISO 100
* set the flash to "A"
* take a picture with the lens cap on
* remove the lense cap and take your pictures - they should come out fine

I don't know why this works but I think that when the TZ1 does not have enough information to compute a shot, it will rely on information from previous shots. Taking a picture with the lens cap on may reset the information in the camera so that it does not rely on previous shots. Setting the ISO to 100 will prevent the over exposed shots as the software may sometimes choose ISO 400

Flash problems

I've been in touch with one of the Panasonic repair centres and they reckon the problem is with the timing, which seems to fit with what everyone is saying. We've sent the camera off and they think it should be about £45 to fix.
