One of four things possible, bad lcd bulb, bad inverter that powers the bulb, or bad mainboard that powers the inverter (rare problem).... and sometimes, bad lcd cable, also rare.
To test, you need a good bulb to plug into this inverter and see if it lights. If it doesn't, then your problem is most likely a bad inverter board. Simply shop online somewhere like eBay to find a replacement. Generally they cost around $30 USD shipped. And you can find it located in the lid, at the bottom of the lcd. You will need to remove any screws in the plastic bezels and carefully pop the bezel off to gain access to it.
One other thing I should mention, I have seen some laptops that have an lcd cutoff switch, or hibernate switch. When you close the lids, its will either put the laptop into a standby state, or it will simply turn the backlight off on the lcd. I've seen those switches get stuck. Note - not all laptops have them.
