Question about Panasonic PT-56HX40 56" Rear Projection Television

Projection TV is Dimming...Getting darker with every hour its on

I have a Panasonic projection TV PT-56HX40, I have had it for 6 years now, I allways knew that at some point I would have to get a replacement bulb/lamp for it. It started to dim about 3 days ago. With every hour that it is on it dims considerably more. I called a TV parts place and they tell me that my TV is not a Lamp TV but a 4 color bulb tv. My questions is: Could there be something elso wrong with my tv than the bulbs? If it where "a" bulb I would surely get a clear image from the other colors, right? If anybody has an insight to this problem, I woul apreciate it.

Probably the projector lamp is getting old. There should be a menu with the hours of life left (or already used). Change the lamp (or let it change by a service). It could be expensve!

My picture is getting darker and I can't brighten it up enough . would all the lamps be going out or what ever power them up be going bad.Any voltage checks be performed??

this set is over 11 years old now. All RPTVs have three CRTs light guns that create's massive static electricity. if this sets lenses and mirror have never been cleaned, this is why its getting darker. there is probably a massive build up of dust/dirt and grime on the light guns and mirror. clean these and it will perform like new again.

Brightness up all the way but pitchure keeps getting darker

There was a post on fixya in about December of 2007 detailing the replacement of capacitor C581 on the "D" board but w/o pics. I can't seem to locate that link now.

But... I just did the C581 fix on my set tonight. Here are pics

Hope this help.

WARNING! There are high voltages inside the set even when unplugged dueto stored energy in some components. Do not attempt this yourselfunless you are experienced with this type of circuitry. I stronglysuggest that you get a professional repair person to do this work.

33uF 160V capacitor from is 82 cents plus shipping in quantity one.

Kids are disappointed we aren't going to upgrade to 52" LCD this week.

Sounds like you need to replace your lamp. The lamp number for this panasonic TV is TY-LA1001. Lamps run anywhere from $120-$250.
