Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

MY Panasonic DVD recorder won't accept any discs. Whatevr disc I put in, pre-srecorded, blank, whatever, the message READ appears, a few grungy noises are heard and then an error message appears, no disc. I would try to clean the spindle but I can't undo the screws that hold the box together.

Hi. Its a Panasonic DMR ES15, not quite two years old. I've now managed to get into it and have tried to clean the spindle and lens with isopropyl alcohol, but it's still the same, three high grungy noises then one low grungy noise, then a NOREAD error, even if there isn't a disc in the tray.

  • neil98 Nov 19, 2008

Hi. I have tried turning the machine on while it is open. The laser light does come on briefly. The grungy noises are caused by the laser housing moving about three eighths of an inch inwards, towards the centre of the disc, which it does four times. On the fourth attempt the spindle rotates briefly too. I stupidly tried the eject button while the lid was off and this led to further problems, as the tray appears to only be held in place by the lid. Think I got this sorted but it meant all I could do was turn the machine on and off to see what was happening. Don't know if this is helpful or not?

    Hi Rifaa

The obesrvations I have described to you so far were made without a disc in the tray. Because of the sounds I am hearing my view is that the player does the same thing every time it is turned on or the drawer is opened or closed, whether a disc is present or not, whether it's a cd or dvd, an empty disc, a finalised disc etc. So it's nothing to do with lens touching disc. The brief spin of the spindle is happening even though there is no disc.

    Hi Rifaa

Thanks for your help with this. I don't know how to check for faulty switch. I think I've got to the point where I need to find an engineer (probably not possible these days) or get a new machine.

Dude, there is NO limit switch anywhere in the drive!!
could it be some Hall Effect switch?

If u have "got into the dvd player" and cleaned the lens then tell me whether the disc is spinning and check if the lens is working, from the sides u can see a red light and the lens will move up and down trying to read the TOC. off the disc.

    post back

The brief spin occurs when the proc. knows the CD is present and it will trun the spindle motor to read the TOC so that the chip can identify whether it is a DVD or a CD, and only tht the beam will stbilize on one Lazer beam ( meaning tht if the CD is VCD u can only see a very weak red light, most of the time it is not visible from the sides, and a bright red light if u have DVD inside, after tht the spindle will reduce or increase in speed depending on the te of the CD ( vcd or dvd).

And only after tht the complete Tale of Content will be displayed on the Screen or display.

If any of these fails u will get no disc error.

Propable faults I can think of from what u have observed so far tht

    1 - dirty lense

2 - faulty spindle motor ( motor rotates but the time taken for the spin up is too long than the time the Watch dog timer in the chip has been programmed to).

Any other fault can be indicated after more inspection, like the if the lense touches the cd or is the movement of the lens even and timed or does it rattle up and down or whether the VCD beam and the DVD beam swiches on and off ( first the bright red, than a weak red light, then after the proper spindle speed the lense stabilzes, this is what u can observe from ur eyes)

And does the cd is firmly held in place by the spindle and the magnet piece, or do u hear any other sound exept the lens focusing and the spindle rotation.

And also the CD woble when in rotation.

Make a few observation and post back

    AAAH!! I get it.

That is when the lens is reached the starting point of the disc, when the power is on or when u close the tray the tracking motor is innitiated and the lens moves inwards to the starting point.

And if the limit switch does not close the lens touches the motor any thing which is in it's way after the limit swictch it will stop but the tracking motor will continue to rotate, tht noise is made when the gears grinds one another.

So U are right, this is nothig to do with a disc. Sorry, My mistake.

If this is the case, U have a broken limit switch located under the spindle moter, it is a little micro normaly open switch which senses when the lens is at the starting position. U have to check if the switch is faulty or not.

Dmr-ES30V Dvd plays pre record movies fine but I

Try a different brand of blank dvd+r or -r. you will find that your dvd machine is fussy on what discs it plays. More exspensive dvd players are fussy with what dvd discs you put in, as cheaper dvd players would virtualy play most types of dvds.

Won't record on blank disc.

Bulk disc that comes in cylinder case are some time faulty and loses quality because they packed on each other. The lens of the disc are sensitive so if disc is scratch or dirty will get error message "no read". Turn the unit off then unplug ac power cord for more than two minutes then reconnect and try disc again, if issue still exist purchase disc that comes in individual case.

Dvd recorder can't read disc it previously read

Take the Disc out and put it aside. You must clean the Laser Eye, and clean dust and other matter from inside your recorder. Clean Eye with rubbibg alcohol and q-tip. A regular CD/DVD cleaner disc will not work. After cleaning, reinsert your Disc and Finalize it.

I recently bought a Panasonic DVD Recorder DMR-EZ27. And it does not read blank DVD's. I've tried different brands of DVD-R's, DVD R's, and DVD-RW's. However it will play and recognize pre-recorded DVD's....

The problem still is;nt fixed. I bought the dvd recorder from a person that buys customer returns at an auction. I contacted him and he offered to give me a full refund or another recorder. He thought it might be a software problem. Thanks for getting back to us on this problem.

Won't format and or won't read disc

I have a similar problem in that it will not record at all or not record very well.  It has a drive inside like a PC DVD drive called the DVD RAM drive. The horrible clunking (grinding) sound is the disc slipping in the spindle. Unfortunately here in Australia the fix is to replace the whole drive (AU$350)!!
I have opened it up and tried to adjust the force of the spindle and it works for a while.
Hope somebody has a better solution.
