    Dear Imo,

Char1ieJ is correct. A .dll file (Dynamic Link Library) is not something that you can execute or open in and of itself. It is meant to be referenced by an executable program. Whether this program should have accompanied your .dll file or was pre-existing is not something we can determine from the information you provided.

As it stands, your best bet for advice remains unchanged. Make sure you downloaded to the correct location. Meaning double check the instructions that should have been made available from the download source. Then recheck your Themes selection.

I would like for you to reconsider the 'Inappropriate' rating you gave Char1ieJ.

This rating is worst type of insult. It can reduce rank and have a profoundly negative effect on an experts overall ratings. It should only be used in the rare case that the advice you received was totally irrelevant to the problem or outrightly profane in which case should be reported as abuse. Neither one of these was the case here. Your rating of Inappropriate was inappropriate.

For the most part, Experts here volunteer their services. Their only compensation may be the satisfaction of helping others and pride in the ratings they receive.

If you check his profile, you will find only one IA rating, yours. You blasted a lot of hard work and the reputation of someone that was trying to help you. I would think this is something you would want to rectify.

Also keep in mind that Experts here pick you, not the other way around. An Asker who doles out IA's for helpful advice without any interaction, even as a mistake (which I think it must be) is unlikely to be helped by a second Expert.

He pointed you in the right direction. He was being helpful with his advice. If you have additional questions or need clarification, we are happy to respond. Most problems cannot be solved without several question and answer volleys.

If you provide a description with a higher level of detail, we can provide a better solution for you. If you comment back with questions, we can walk you right up to the Solutions door and knock for you.

It depends on your level of commitment. Now it also depends on you either getting that IA removed or improved. Until then, you have the only solution you are likely to get. It's a Karma thing.

I don't make the rules, I'm just letting you know you shot yourself in the foot.
You know how to fix it.
You know you should fix it.
    So Fix it.
The balls in your court. Good luck.

    Thank You Imo,

It may seem like a little thing to most folks. But it means a lot to us.
The rating system here isn't the most intuitive. We take it for granted and sometimes forget it can be confusing for the people on the other side of our screens. Mistakes can be made too.

Whatever happened, I try to think the best of people, give them the benefit of the doubt. Hence, my earlier post. Your response reinforces that belief.

    Your gesture was truly appreciated.

    Thank you again
    Mike

Themes are not just DLL files. It sounds like you may have received only part of the download. Try downloading the program again.
I hope this helps!

I was able to download this zip file about a xp theme and i was able to unzip it already, but there's no executable file to istall my new theme. please help me.. thanks,...

Prepare Your Computer
  1. Because Micro$oft wants you buy everything from them, Windows XP wants theme files to be digitally signed. If they aren't then XP won't let you use the themes. You must first patch your uxthemes.dll file in your C:\Windows\System32 directory. This can be easily done using the Uxthemes Patch which you can download here. The patch supports Windows XP, SP1, SP2, XP 64 bit and Windows Server 2003. Run the patch, it will "fix" your uxtheme.dll file so you can use 3rd party visual styles. Disregard any warnings about files being changed, that is what we want to do. After you run the patch reboot your computer. Note: We recommend you create a restore point before running the patch just for good measure. We did not author this file we have used it our selves with no problems, use it at your own risk.
Install the XP Theme Files
  1. Themes are usually downloaded as a .zip file which must first be scanned using a virus scanning program, then unzipped to a temporary folder you can create on your desktop. Inside that folder you will most likely find a wallpaper image, .msstyles file, a .theme file and possibly a font file. it all depends on what the author has chosen to include in their theme package.

  2. If your theme package contains one or more font files (.ttf) copy them to your C:\Windows\Fonts\ folder.

  3. You may also find one or more .theme files (like axis.theme. Copy it/them to your C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\ folder. You will see a folder called Luna already in there, leave that alone, it is your existing Micro$oft XP Theme.

  4. Locate the .msstyles file, create a folder in the C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\ folder, I usually name it what the .msstyles file is named (like axis.msstyles so the folder would be axis).

  5. If you find a file called ShellStyle.dll, create a folder called Shell inside the first folder you created. Create another folder inside that called NormalColor. Copy ShellStyle.dll into the NormalColor folder.

  6. Most of the time you will unzip the file and everything will be properly ordered and only need to be copied to your C:\Windows\Resources\Themes\ folder.

  7. To install the wallpaper copy the wallpaper image file to your My Pictures folder.

How to Use the XP Theme
  1. While in your My Pictures folder that contains your wallpaper, click on the wallpaper file once to highlight it. In the menu on the left side of the window you will see at the top Picture Tasks. Click on Set as desktop background. You should see the wallpaper on your desktop.

  2. If the wallpaper needs to be stretched to fill the screen close the My Pictures window. Right click on the desktop, select Properties. The Display Properties window comes up, choose the Desktop tab. Your wallpaper should be highlighted in the list, using the Position box choose if you want it Tiled, Centered or Stretched.

  3. While in Display Properties if your theme had a .theme file select the Themes tab and select your theme from the list. If your theme only had a .msstyles file go to the Appearance tab and select your theme from the Windows and Buttons list.

  4. After you are done making your choices you can go to the Themes tab and save your theme by clicking Save As..., and then name it something.

  5. That's all there is to it and all without buying any programs.

I just downloaded this Vista theme for my Hp but it's saying there's no available application for it.

You must have downloaded a file file from the internet that is being called "Vista Theme". If this is true that its a file every file has an extension and requires proper application to run. There are many different types of files and this difference is marked by file extensions. Different files are different from each other because they have different extensions.
To run a file you need to know the file extension and have a related software to run it on your computer. How to find the file extension. Just right click the file and take the properties of it a window will open and show you the the file extension and if your lucky it will show an installed program on your PC that can run the file.
If you do not find a software indicated there you have to go to an internet search engine like Google.com or Yahoo.com. Type the file extension of the Vista theme there and augment with these key words FILE EXTENSION.
You will have access to the information that will tell you which program or application can run that particular file extension. Obtain or download that program or Application. Run it and enjoy!

Good Luck!

How to install window vista theme?

it depends on what kind of file you downloaded...it can get tricky when you download themes, because sometimes you're actually downloading themes that HAVE to go through "windows blinds" program or such...so first, check what kind of file it is, if it's a .theme file than you're set, all you have to do is right click on the desktop, then click on properties, then on the first tab, click the little arrow next to where it says "themes" and go down to the buttom of the list where it says "browse" then simply find the file you downloaded (assuming it's .theme) and open it, then you can select it in the drop down box and click ok....your set.

I can't apply vista themes which i have download from internat as i have window vista home premium

The error you are getting says that the theme can not be loaded because theme service is not running, so to start the themes service press WIN+R on your keyboard, type "services.msc" in the run box (without commas) and from the list that opens, find the theme service and start/enable it.
