Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

Bottom of GE interior door microwave is burnt/rusted

On the bottom of the inside of the door, the whole length is rusted/burnt and flaking.  Is my microwave still safe?  Should I be replacing the whole microwave or is just replacing the door cost effective?  My microwave is only about 3 or 4 years old.  Wish I'd kept the receipt so I'd know.  Many thanks.

Just use sand paper to clean the rust then use some high temperature paint (sold in tins) eg spray paint but it must be labeled high temperature and spray 2 to 3 coats . your microwave should be safe again

The white ceiling coat has come away and is falling off. Microwave is out of guarantee. Have I any come back on this. Also, is this dangerous?

Is this by chance a Samsung Microwave?? I just answered a similar question with a picture right before this. In the other post, it looked like the Micro was either painted while it was already rusted or it is rusting from the inside out into the cavity where you cook food. In either case, regardless of age, I would contact the manufacturer and explain to them that this could be a factory defect. Safety issue would be possible paint/rust flakes in uncovered food. If manufacturer puts you off, contact Better Business Bureau.

There is rust inside the microwave, ist it still safe to use

if the unit starts to spark then you can buy microwave paint but if it goes through the door or the base then a professonal repair is best, clean the rust with rubbing paper and coat with thin layers let each one dry and build up a good layer of paint, hope this helps.

I have rust on the door. The unit is 13 years old. Does it make sense to sand and paint the door, replace the door, or replace the unit. If sand and paint, what type of primer and finish paint. If...

lots of questions that may be too difficult to help make a decion.

1) Depends on the degree of rust and whether it is inside or outside.
Outside is easier to deal with. Inside it would be subject to heat burning and odour as most are baked enamel finishes and are not paint at all, but a ceramic compund.
Outside can be rust removed which creates its own undercoat as it dries using the rust particles in an altered chemical state. An enamel paint is preferred or even a ceramic based compund.

replacingt the whole door may involve dollars to $100 unless you can find a second hand market for spares.

Frankly, because Microwaves have become so cheap now ( even secoid hand ones) you can pick them up from $50 to 200 depending on size and wattage. i would consider that it has had its time and replace the whole unit. After 13 years of service its time to retire it and move up. Newer ones are more power efficient and better sealed against radiation leaks than the older ones

Whirlpool gold GT4175SPS-2 inside door paint is flaking and revealing metal. Is it safe to use?

Scratches, flaking and bare spots are fairly common, but should be addressed as soon as they arise so the corrosion will not spread and arcing does not occur.

Unplug the power cord first.

Take some mild sanding cloth or scotchbright and clean the bare and rusted areas in the microwave. Use appliance touch up paint to re-coat the surface. You can find the touch up at most anywhere that sells appliances, it comes in a plastic bottle similar in appearance to fingernail polish, yes it does have a brush inside.

Let it dry per the instructions on the bottle or 24 hours if not specified.

Microwave safety after repainting

Too generic...Did you use the high-temp appliance enamel recommended, or a spray...or worse?

Was the rust inside where it can contact food through the circulating air, or on the outer body?

First thought based on how I read the question: Never use that machine again...but that's based on the word "in" instead of "on my microwave".

If the rust was around the door frame, outside the seals, and you used an enamel (of course) then you may be OK...but...
Considering the fact that a cheap microwave is a drop in the bucket when compared to your family's health...Why risk it?

Bottom of door inside badly rusted - oven works fine

Yes you can paint it.. Begin by removing the rust with either a wire brush or a thick paste product called naval jelly. Then prime the area and finally paint it with appliance paint, abailable in a spray can at most hardware stores in the color of your appliance.

Paint has chipped off bottom of MW

Moisture accumulation can sometimes be caused if the cooling fan is not running properly or if the vents in the back are blocked or there is not enough free space around the sides and back of the microwave.

One thing that helps is to keep the door open a few minutes after using it and to wipe down the inside after use.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

Paint off inside top of microwave exposing metal. Safe to use?

It would be dangerous to do so. Any exposed metal inside a microwave is source for sparks and is extremely hazardous. I would recommend getting the paint job done up, or even better, buy a newer model.
