This problem started last week, and my family is a little frantic... Our answering machine, when you call and try to leave a message, won't record a message and you hear that fax machine/dial-up-type of sound. This is even though the person is NOT sending a fax. We thought it was the answering machine, but eliminated that possibility, because there is nothing wrong with it. Then, we thought it was the X4270 and how it was affecting it. We have tried disconnecting it to restart, tried to configure it, but it seems stubborn as a horse as it insists on 'dialing our fax number' even though we don't HAVE anything to fax! We just want it to stop messing with our answering machine, so that we can receive messages and not have a lot of close friends ask 'where are we?'
I apologize if this doesn't make sense, but I have tried to find solutions for this, and they are not available.
Thats an easy one, if the all in one is attatchd to pc and not stand alone, go into your pc settings, go to printers and faxes under control panel and take the fax off default setting. It will no longer be able to dial the fax and should revert to answereing. also check if your fax mode is set correctly for what you want. It may be on fax mode only so it automatically dials fax. Good luck.

Make sure the that the fax line is working. To check, insert a telephone device straight to the fax line. You should get a dial tone.
Make sure the telephone cord from the phone jack in the wall is plugged into the Line port on the back of your Lexmark printer.
Assign the correct fax number on the printer.
If you have an answering machine connected to the same
line as the fax, set the answering machine to answer incoming calls before the printer does. Increase
the number of rings by a factor of 3 over the answering machine. For example, if the answering
machine is set to pick up on 4 rings, set the printer to pick up on 7 rings.
If you have a voicemail feature in the same line as the
fax, you may subscribe from your phone service provider for a distinctive ring
pattern feature. You can program your printer to have a distinctive ring
pattern and phone number for incoming faxes.
If these don't help, please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.
Make sure to plug the telephone fax line from the phone jack in the wall to
the Line port on the back of your printer. For more info, please refer to the
Lexmark X4200 User's Guide.
Make sure the fax machine is connected to right phone jack in the wall and is assigned with the correct fax number.
If you have an answering machine connected to the same fax line, be sure to
configure it so that it answers first before the fax machine (e.g. if your
answering machine picks up on the 3rd ring, set your fax to pick up on the
6th ring or more)
If the line has a voicemail feature, disable it or request for a
distinctive ring from your phone company.
Make sure the correct fax number is assigned on the printer. If you have an answering machine connected to the same line as your fax, configure it so that the answering machine picks up first then the fax. For more information, please refer to this article: Change Number of Rings on Inkjet AIO to Alleviate Issues with Answering Machines.
If you have a voicemail feature associated with the fax line, please disable the voicemail. Voicemail feature and the fax will not work together in the same line.

Download and install the X4270 driver for Windows 7 using the links below:
and set it to answer before the X4270 does. Say, 4 rings for the answering machine and 5 for the X4270.
The X4270 will monitor the few first seconds of the call anyway, and if it detects the whistle of an incoming fax, it will disconnect the answering machine and receive the fax.
With most answering machines, disconnecting while the greeting message is still playing will not be considered a call.
You need to connect answering machine to the external phone jack on the All-In-One. Then press button Auto Answer. More info at http://www.lexmark.com/publications/pdfs/2007/4200/ug/en/frameset.html
there are fax/phone switch that you can use to connect the phone and fax machine to use a single line. price range from $46 and up.
that is probably the best solution, other than switch the line manually.

FAX RECEPTION THROUGH AN ANSWERING MACHINE: This mode is recommended for a shared fax and telephone line. To receive a fax if your All-In-One is connected to an answering machine: On the control panel, press Fax. Set the answering machine to answer incoming calls before the All-In-One does. For example, if you have set the answering machine to answer calls after 3 rings, set the All-In-One to answer calls after 5 rings. To change this setting on the All-In-One: Press Options until Number of rings appears. Press the right arrow (+) until After 5 rings appears. Press Select. Make sure the Auto Answer light on the All-In-One is on. When a ring is detected, the answering machine picks up the call. If a fax is detected, the All-In-One receives the fax, and disconnects the answering machine. If a fax is not detected, the answering machine completes the call.
