Question about Dishwashers

Kenmore Elite Dishwasher- The touchpad (control panel) keeps going ot and stops functioning. The control board is fine but the start button on the touchpad stops working. If I press it multiple times over and over it will finally engage and kick on. This is my second control panel, can the switch membranes be cleaned somehow?

I have a Kenmore Elite model 665.15962990. I have had it for 8 years. A few days ago the touch panel seemed to go dead and so did the LED. After pushing the buttons several times the motor kicked on, but the washer behaved strangely. The LED displayed what looked like Klingon.

After looking through the Repair Parts Lists with its exploded view of the washer components, I narrowed the problem down to either the power module (part # 9744031), the console assembly which includes the button touchpad (part # [white = 3384101], [bisque = 3384150], [black = 3384100]), or the dual light display a.k.a. LED (part # 3383825).

I took the washer apart because I was told I can't return the power module and it costs roughly $150 at my local appliance repair shop. In looking at everything, the power module is the most likely candidate. The LED is a separate unit and is powered by the power module. The buttons are the same way. Since both of those separate components are behaving strangely, my best guess is the power module is not powering either of them correctly.

    Also I found this link:http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/appliances/...

    I hope this helps someone.

Yes, that fixed it. When I called Sears they mentioned that this is also the computer control module, not just a power module. That makes sense, given the behavior I was seeing. The new one I ordered didn't come with a new thermal breaker and at first I thought maybe it was the wrong part. But the original thermal breaker clips off of the old power module and clips on to the new one. I was up and running in about 10 minutes.

There is a warning that you may receive a fatal shock if you don't disconnect power before swapping the power module. I took their advice.

Remove 6 screws from the inside of the washer door and lift gently. It will lift off with about a foot of space before you need to reach down and unplug two wires so you can lift off the entire inside surface. After you remove the inside surface the door isn't heavy enough to stay down on its own weight so you may need an extra hand to stop it from swinging up while you have all of the parts exposed.

A plastic box covers the power module and it snaps out pretty easily from one side. Two screws hold the power module in. You can hold the new one next to the old one and swap plugs from old to new so that you don't make any mistakes. Screw it back together and turn on the power.

I had a similar problem.  Some touchpad controls worked (e.g. the Cancel/Drain button), but some did not (the Quick Rinse and Start buttons).  I also have the Kenmore Elite Dishwasher (model 665.17282401), which is only 3.5 years old.

I removed the Console Assembly.  I searched the internet to look for a source for replacement parts and found on FixYa a special keystroke sequence which is supposed to reset the electronic controls.  I put back the Console Assembly, entered the reset sequence, then magically the Start button (an all other buttons) were working again.
I don't know if this was due to the reset or due to cleaning and re-installing the Console Assembly.

How do I fix a flashing Start/Resume light on a Kenmore Elite dishwasher model 665.13793K601?

These dishwashers are known to accumulate moisture in the keypad and then short. The solution that I have seen is to replace the keypad...It is possible that all of your issues with this dishwasher could point back to the keypad. After spending $$$ on the circuit boards, do you want to throw and additional $135 for a keypad? or replace the whole unit? Food for thought. Here is a link for you:

Kenmore elite dishwasher stops mid cycle

I assume you mean it stopped in mid cycle and is now dead. If this is the case you will need to turn off the power to the dishwasher and remove the screws holding the front control panel There is a thermal fuse clipped to the front of the control panel Check it using an ohmmeter or continuity tester If it is open you will need to replace it with a kit containing the fuse and wire connectors Do not replace just the thermal fuse the problem will surely return. Also inspect the control board for burned areas. If the control board is burned you should replace the wiring harness with the control assembly

Thermal Fuse

If the dishwasher won't start the thermal fuse might have blown. The thermal fuse helps to prevent damage to the dishwasher by turning off power so that it doesn't overheat. Once blown, the thermal fuse will have to be replaced for the dishwasher to work. The thermal fuse is usually located in the control panel on the control board or mounted to the bottom of the tank behind the lower panel. The thermal fuse can be checked for continuity.

Door Switch

The door switch, or switches, are sometimes called interlock switches. The door switch prevents the dishwasher from running while the door is open. If the dishwasher won't start, the switch or switches might be defective. To access the door switches, remove the control panel or inside door panel - depending on the model. They can be tested for continuity.

Door Latch

If the dishwasher does not start, the door latch assembly might be defective. These are normally made of plastic and cannot be repaired. If the door won't latch and the door latch is broken, replace it.

Main Control Board

The main control board provides power to nearly every component of the dishwasher. If the dishwasher won't start the main control board might be defective. You should first check for more common parts. Many times control boards are replaced unnecessarily because the problem was not diagnosed properly.

Touchpad and Control Panel

If the touchpad is defective, the control board might not get the signal for the selections made. If the dishwasher won't start and the display doesn't seem to change properly when the buttons are pressed, the touchpad might need to be replaced. On some models the touchpad and control panel are sold together and will need to be replaced at the same time.

Timer

The timer allows power to flow to the proper parts at the proper times. If the dishwasher won't start, the timer might be defective. Keep in mind that timers are often misdiagnosed as the cause of a problem. Check other components first before replacing the timer.

Touchpad and Control Panel

If the buttons don't work on the control panel the entire touchpad and control panel assembly may need to be replaced. If the display works but the dishwasher functions are all out of synch, or some of the buttons don't respond properly the entire touchpad and control panel might need to be replaced.

Touchpad

If the buttons don't work on the control panel, the dishwasher touchpad might be at fault. Generally speaking, if the dishwasher display is working and some of the buttons respond correctly but some don't, the problem is with the touchpad.

Main Control Board

The dishwasher has a main control board which regulates nearly every function in the dishwasher. If the control panel buttons don't work, and other causes have been ruled out, the main control board might need to be replaced.
