When I plug my camera into the USB port nothing comes up on the screen for me to import photos like the computer does not recognise my camera is plugged in. This just started happening today.

Try going and shutting down and unplug the computer. Push the start button until if flashes. The go ahead and plug computer back in the wall socket then restart do not connect the camera yet. Once your logged on and settled in. Then plug the camera back in to the USB port. It should pick up the driver and open options for what to do with the files. Also make sure you are powered on with the camera when you plug it in.
If it still does not pickup the camera go ahead and install the driver disc again for your camera or the software disk. Then try it again. Also go to my computer and left click to see if it is showing up in the devices. I hope this assisted you thanks for using FixYa for all your computer questions. John

Could the Freecom Tough Drive 500GB turn computer off? It is happening with my computer pretty often. I did experiment with another computer. Another computer was shut down as well. I have already come to...

Wouldn't surprise me, I just fixed a Dell xps that wouldn't boot from cd/rom or hdd. Whenusing a different hdd it booted fine. After 3 days & finally testing it on another machine via usb,so I could scan it, there were 49 viruses that apparently can shut down a hdd,cd/rom, even an entire pc. Could also be a problem with the power board for the hdd if it plugs in usb. I have an issue currently where if I plug anything into my card reader it bsod's on me.

USB Troubles

How To Refresh and reinstall USB Ports Of Your Computer Hello there, the other day i tried refreshing and reinstalling the USB ports on my PC, as some of my connecting devices are not recognized. I present the detailed procedure on refreshing the USB ports.
Let’s go!!

Here are the steps to refresh/reinstall/uninstalling the USB ports on the computer.

The USB port needs to be refreshed to make sure that no other device has captured the USB port of the computer. The Mouse, video camera, your external USB hard disk; what ever it may be.

Follow the steps given below to refresh USB ports.

1. Right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, and then select Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager Button.
4. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller and select Uninstall.
6. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.

Please note, repeat Steps 5 and 6 until all the devices under Universal Serial Bus Controller are removed.

7. Shut down the computer.

CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected, instead of the Restart option.

8. Wait for 5 seconds and then restart the computer. When the computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware" message window will open.

The above steps will refresh the USB ports.

Now connect the USB devices like mouse, video camera, your external USB hard disk...USB hubs...whatever you like and the drivers should install automatically.

Tip: It is always recommended to connect the main USB devices at the rear end USB port. As they require more power to initiate.

The above steps are for XP operating system. When coming to the matter of Vista, please note the changes below:
===========================
1) Right-click Computer icon from the desktop , and then click Properties to open the System Properties window, and then select the Device Manager tab.

2) Click the Plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers/Root hub.

3) Click the USB Composite Device entry to highlight it, and then click Remove. If a screen appears to confirm the deletion, confirm the deletion.

4) Disconnect the USB cable to the all-in-one, wait a couple seconds, and then reconnect the cable. This should restart Windows device detection (Plug and Play).

5) A New Hardware found screen may appear, click next through all of the screens that appear for the Wizard to install the USB Composite Device. Click Finish once the wizard completes.

My 2 usb ports on my monitor not working

In order for the two USB ports on the monitor to work, the monitor itself has to be connected to your computer via another USB cable with connectors that look like this:
8130925.jpg
The flat connector goes into an available USB port on your computer, the square one plugs into your monitor. Check if your cable is connected properly or exchange it with another one.
To eliminate that there is something wrong with your "not recognized device", plug this device into another USB port of your computer. The reason to preferably remove the device safely in Windows is that you can loose data if you just unplug it. If it is an external harddrive, it can get damaged, because you interrupt the power and the read/write head can get "stuck". So check this device on another computer or USB port.

If you have any other questions or something is not clear to you, just come back here and leave a comment and I'm happy to help.
