Question about Vtech Lands Phones

At least three different times, the phone displayed "line in use" when it isn't. All jacks and plugs were checked and all troubleshooting tips in manual tried. Two other older linephones in our home had no dial tone during these times. Then the phones all start working again without us doing anything. Additionally, there is terrible static and crackling. The local phone company has been out twice, said the static was fixed, but it isn't.

Pull the power from all phones, and wait a few minutes and then plug them back in, if that doesn't work you have a defective base station most likely.

SOURCE: Phone line/phone jack problem

The wiring on the jacks is set up for a 2 line phone.

If you take the jacks apart, you will see either:
A) red, green, and black, yellow
B)white blue/blue white and white orange/orange white

You need to swap the pairs.
If there are red/green/black/yellow wires. remove the yellow/black and move them to where the red/greens are. Then put the red/green wires, where the yellow/black used to be.

OR, you need to swap the orange and the blue wires.

SOURCE: bought phone EX18560 Series yesterday.

I have two older (2002) model cordless Uniden phones that require the handsets to return to their original factory bases. If they have rested on another Uniden base, even of the same model, there is no dialup tone. Replace to the original base and you should be back in service.

What you need is a dsl filter since you are working off a splitter. You can usually get these for free from your phone company.

Let's make this official, then. Problem has to be in the modem or some piece of the cable or phone company outside equipment. You should get them back out for a closer look.

Phone displays error message "check tel line


The phone is not detecting dial tone on the line. Are you able to hear a dial tone? If not - disconnect the cable at the phone and plug into a different phone. If it works, then the problem is with the Panasonic phone - if it doesn't work - the problem is with the cable, jack, wiring, etc.

The phone display says check phone line?


If you have dial tone then the part of the phone that senses the line is malfunctioning. If you do not have dial tone, (more likely. then check your phone cord, phone jack (try using a different jack or cord or you can test the ones you are using with a different telephone). Most likely there is some sort of short circuit or break in the phone line preventing the phone service from reaching the phone base.

My KX-TG6511 Phone is in it's cradle but line in use message shows. It's the only one on that line


Check your phone line with a) a new cord between the base and the jack and b) a different phone (I prefer an old cordless phone). If you still get a "line in use" message (alternate errors: fast busy signal or no dial tone), use your test phone at a different jack and determine if the issue persists. If you can, find where your phone service comes in and open the box. If you are lucky and have a fairly new service connection, you'll be able to plug your RJ-11 phone line in and check if there is the problem is at the box. If you can't test at this point, you need to contact your phone company to diagnose if the problem is inside or outside.

If the problem is only with the KX-TG65111 phone, try unplugging the base from the phone line and the cord from the wall jack, disconnecting the base AC power cord (from both sides - phone first) and removing the batteries the handset. After a few minutes, plug in phone line, power cord and batteries and test again. If it still fails, then the phone needs service. These cordless phones are not designed for the home user to service. If the phone is under warranty, contact Panasonic. Otherwise, decide if it is worth having the unit serviced or replacing.

If no phone works at this one jack but does work at another jack, you have a wiring problem at the jack or in the wall to the jack. Try opening up the outlet and check for loose or damaged wires. The jack is either wired directly to screw terminals or punch down terminals. For the screws, it's relatively easy to strip the insulation and retighten the connections. For the punch down style, you will need the appropriate tool. (It's available from many hardware stores in the wiring section.) If none of your inside jacks work, look at the exposed wiring and check for any obvious damage. Otherwise, you'll need to find the problem in the walls. You may want a professional to do the job.

If the problem is outside, your phone company will fix the probem for you for free. If the problem is inside, they'll fix the problem for a fee.

If you have a DSL line and a filter on the line, check and replace that if it is part of your inside wiring.

No dial tone


  • First, try to check every telephone line is properly plugged into its phone jack. If you have a problem with just one phone, plug a different phone into that jack. If the second phone works, the problem lies in the first phone.
  • Then unplug each phone and answering machine in your house, one at a time. Wait 30 seconds after unplugging the first device. Pick up another phone to see if there's a dial tone -- if there is, then the first phone may be faulty. If not, continue unplugging phones in the same way and check for dial tone. If you find a phone that doesn't work, plug all your other phones back in and see if they work properly. The faulty phone should be replaced.
  • or disconnect the plug from the test jack inside the exterior box. This disconnects your inside wiring from phone company's line. If you have more than one line, select the test jack for the line that is causing the problem. Plug your phone into the jack; this plugs you directly into the phone company's line. If you have a cable modem, plug the phone directly into the jack on the modem.
  • Then pick up the phone receiver to see if there's a dial tone. If there's no dial tone, the problem is with your outside wiring. If there is a dial tone, the trouble is caused by your inside wiring, equipment or jacks.

    I have Linksys spa-942 phone. its display not working. i want to know about current ip address of this phone. is it any way to listen ip address through this phone?


    Easiest way to troubleshoot this would be with a second phone. Plug another phone into the line, if the phone works then you know the problem is with the original phone. If the other test phone isn't working then it would be either the cable running from the phone to the wall, the wall jack, cable running from wall jack to the PBX or VoIP modem.

    I have an emergency and my phones are reading ''line in use'' please help me


    unplug all phones on the lines and everything else possible plugged in , then try using a different home (wired) phone to one jack. if it is okay, one wire or phone is bad. then try different phones one at a time to see if it clears. this will troubleshoot which part is bad. let me know.

    Second line not working


    The phone will show that "line in use" message when it's not connected correctly.

    If your two phone lines come in to one jack, make sure you are using a 4-wire line cord connected to the "line 1 and line 2" jack on the phone. You may be using a 2-wire cord so the second line isn't reaching the phone.

    If the two lines are on separate jacks you need to connect line 2 to the separate "line 2" jack.

    If you know for a fact that both lines are properly connected to the phone and it still doesn't see the second line, then it's time for a new phone.

    SHARP UX-B750 facsimile will not receive faxes and displays the message "NO SERVICE".


    Plug a regular phone into the wall jack and listen for a dial tone.

    Make sure you are plugged into the LINE port of your fax machine.

    If there are two RJ-11 jacks on the fax machine you need to make sure that the line from the wall is plugged into the LINE jack not the TEL jack. If that is not it let me know and I will provide you some troubleshooting instructions from the factory service manual.
