I have the yaesu ft990, the problem is when turning the power switch one, the radio goes dim, all lights flash, and gives of a load buzz, but if i keep turning on and off, it will power up properly.

odd issue. It sounds like the power supply is not working correctly. The noise must be the power supply either powering on or issuing a noise through the speaker. Dim lights add to my suspicion. Take the housing off and check all connections are tight. Unplug it from the wall first. Is using a battery backup, unplug that too. The easiest test is to take another power supply and wire it in the place of the internal one. Make certain you have one large enough (enough amps) or use a 12 volt battery. If it powers up fine from either the new power supply or battery it IS your power supply.

E1 is a 100 uF 16 VDC capacitor. I have been repairing these units lately and have experienced some of the same symptoms (LED goes red but doesn't transition to green after 30 seconds like it should). I have been able to repair some of these units. Make sure the power supply is working properly before spending significant time on the D2A board. The power supply is responsible for supplying 12, 5, and 3.3 VDC to the D2A board. A defective PS will measure 14.5 instead of 12, 6 instead of 5, and 2.9 instead of 3.3. The AC ripple should be about 5 mV on the 3.3 and the 5 volt supplies when loaded. The 12 volt can be as high as 50 mV on a good PS. The culprits are C12 (1000uf) and C10 (470 uf) which are the filter capacitors for the 3.3 and 5V outputs respectively. C12, the capacitor for the 3.3 V output is especially critical because it is used to feed the voltage regulator and overvoltage shutdown circuit. D7 is a hot part and can also fail sometimes. I have repaired 50% of my units just by changing these capacitors. I still have units where the D2A board is bad with a known good power supply. If anyone has more info on the D2A (like a schematic) please pass it along

Ultra 750 watt power supply ,+12 dc volt output showing ac component of 1.5 to 2.7 volts on new unused ps

Is this with or without a load?
There is always some ripple on the DC output of a switching mode power supply, and the less the load, the greater the ripple.
Measure the power supply under full load, that's the real test!

How can you tell if a Dell power supply for a PowerEdge 2900 is good? Should the lights at least indicate when power is connected even with the PS is removed from the machine? How do you best determine if...

You cannot test the power supply on the bench just by connecting it to the mains power. You need to know which pins on the connector to activate the power supply and you need to connect a load to the power leads.
The best way to test the power supply is to leave the power unit connected to the computer power up the computer and test a spare 4 wire power connector with a multi-meter. Leave the other power leads connected to the various drivers.
If computer's power LED should light up then test the voltages.
The Red and black wire should read 5 volts.
The Yellow and black wire should read 12 volts.
If the power LED does not light up, check the mains lead in another appliance to see if the mains lead is OK.
If the mains lead is OK then most likely the switch mode power supply has died.

Printer will not turn on. power supply voltages

You should verify that your voltmeter is reading correctly. Check it against an fresh flashlight cell--it should read about 1.56 to nearly 1.6 volts. You apparently don't have an overload problem. Usually, only one voltage is the reference voltage for the voltage regulator (+5 volt?). It is entirely possible that the two supplies have a common failure. Make sure they have not been set for 220 volt AC supply.

Which wire is the 'ON-PS' switch for the Astec Model SA145-3435 power supply?

I found out that the AT supply SA145-3435 does not have a switch wire like an ATX supply. I have a SA145-3435 my self. To get it to work it must have a +5 volt load (BLACK and RED) and a +12 volt load (BLACK and YELLOW). If it does not have both of these loads it will power down after a 2 second delay when you plug it up. I used 2 small 12 volt bulbs. One for the 12 volt line and one for the 5 volt line. The type of blub I used was a #94 I got from the auto parts store.

found this on a different forum
http://www.diybanter.com/archive/index.php/t-143488.html
but there are two
quick things you might be able to do. If it is a PTK195 you can most
likely install the updated power supply board. If you can solder and
know safety (like discharging caps) you can update the PS chip from an
STK730-??? to an STK730-180 (IIRC). I found that simply replacing the
chip with an equivalent fails most of the time. The 180s seem to hold
up.

YAMAHA R-V701 MAKES BUZZING SOUND & WONT TURN ON

This could be the indication of an open resistor, or bad Capacitor in power supply. May not be visible to eye, but if you look in PS. there should be atleast one big sized cap and every PS has a bridge rectifier, this is usually 4 diodes in series, check them and see if any open, shorted
