I would change the battery first. Then try adjusting the temperature to see if that has any affect. From here I would guess the temp sensing thermistor is open or short, causing it to indicate the extreme temperature of it's capability. Test the thermistor and replace, or replacing the thermostat are the only solutions. I hope this helps.
If the setting was at 80 degrees and it didn't turn off, that's because the room didn't reach 80 degrees yet. Keep track of the room temperature as well as if it turns off when set for a lower temperature.
I believe it means (I assume winter weather in my example):
1. Wake - This is the time you wake up and you would set the temperature at the time you want it then. So, your temperature throughout the night might have been set at 63, and if your "wake" time on the thermostat is set to 6:00 am and 68 degrees, then your system will automatically adjust the temperature setting to 68 degrees at 6:00 am.
2. Leave - This is the time that you would typically leave your house for work. You probably don't need to heat or cool your house that much during this time especially if no one will be there. So, let's say you leave for work at 8:00 am. You would set this time for 8:00 am and 60 degrees.
3. Return - This is the time you get off work. Let's say you get off at 5:00 pm. You would set this time for 5:00 pm and 65 degrees. Then the system will start warming up at 5:00 pm and will be warmer by the time you get home.
4 - Sleep - This is for when you go to bed. Following the example, let's say that you set your temperature while sleeping to 63 degrees at 10:00 pm. Then, the system adjusts at that time and will adjust again as soon as then next parameter is met, which at this point would be the wake time.
This is usually for a Mon - Fri schedule and then a separate one for the weekend.
there is a installer setup in this thermostat. do you still have the book? you will need to gain access to the installer setup/programming and in it you will find a setting called auto recovery turn it off. what this does is after a few days of initally running the system figured out it needed to come on earlier and is starting before the set time to come on... you can turn it off and then will have to adjust depending on insulation value/construction type of home how soon you want it to come on so that it reaches desired temperature when you want... hope this helps you out,,,
You didn't include a model number, so it's hard to know for sure - but I'll take a stab at this one. Many of these t-stats have a programmable offset to reduce "hunting". This can be as little as 1 degree or more than 2 degrees.
This means if you set the offset to 1 degree and the room temperature to about 65 degrees, the furnace will heat the room until the t-stat registers a rising temperature of 66 degrees. The furnace shuts off and will not turn on again until the t-stat registers a falling temperature of 64 degrees. The average is 65 degrees, and prevents the furnace from starting and stopping numerous times instead of just once with the 1 degree offset.
You can further reduce the number of furnace start and stops by increasing the offset to 2 degrees. This would work like this when the t-stat is set to 65 degrees and the room is cool:
Room Temp Furnace 63 On 64 On 65On 66 On 67 On 68 Off
The room is now warm and heat or furnace is off. The room begins to cool like below:
67 Off 66 Off 65 Off 64 Off 63 Off 62 On
With a 1 degree offset, the room temperature varies +/-1 degree (about 2 degrees total). With a 2 degree offset, the temperature about varies +/ -2 degrees (about 4 degrees total).
Also, when the thermostat shut the heat off, the heat that was made is delivered to the space instead of wasted by sending outdoors - so the room will get a little warmer even though no fuel is being burned. The same holds true at the other end. When the t-stat turn heat on, fuel is burned, but there's little heat until the source has reached the optimum temperature and then the heat is delivered to the space.

you should hear the themostat make a light click when it calls for heat...the hold or as you said temporary hold overides any programming you have and should maintain that temperature you are setting it on indefinetely of until the next programmed cycle... to check and make sure the unit is actually working properly try it again ... actually go after you hold the setting and see if unit is working...digital thermostat have a five minute time delay built in so from the time you press hold and raise the temperature above house temp a few degrees start a counter for 5 mins... if the unit does not come on then unplug the unit or reset breakers to heat and try again watching the unit to see if anything happens...is this a gas unit or electric unit? if the unit never responds then go to thermostat and remove cover take a small jumper wire and jump out the "r" terminal and the "w"terminal which is power and heat circuit see if it comes on if it does and should immediately as this way bypasses the thermostat operation then you have a faulty t-stat.
