Question about Watches

1 Answer

Water ingress Shortly after having my Tag Heuer, gents automatic watch serviced, in August, the numerals started to discolour. Then the glass became obscured by tiny droplets of water. Clearly water is present. I work overseas and only periodically return to the UK. Upon my return a couple of weeks ago I arranged to have my watch returned to the service agent and have just been advised that the water has got in due to the crown not being sufficiently tightened, this being a common problem at this time of year when the clocks are changed. I find this very difficult to digest as I've had this watch for about 12 years and I'm sure I've previously been diving without the crown being fully tightened. The only water that my watch is currently subjected to is my twice daily shower. Appreciate hearing what you might have to say. Regards Peter C. King.

Many thanks Charlie, it looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet and pay for the repair. I recall getting a pressure test certificate accompanying the last service. Thanks again.

    Regards

    Peter.

Peter,
I am not a Tag expert, but do have quite a bit of experience with Rolex and Tudor watches. Without a shadow of a doubt, the top three water egress points are:

  1. Crown
  2. Crystal
  3. Caseback
I would check the recent service receipt to make sure they replaced the crown gasket (or o-ring). If you know for sure you have submerged or wet the watch without the crown being tightened in the past, the problem is likely a mis-aligned or missing gasket (o-ring). Also, have your watchmaker take a look at the crystal and caseback. I had a watch serviced once -- and the watchmaker forgot to tighten the caseback. Thankfully, no water got into the watch.

I hope your results are satisfactory.
Regards,
CharlieJ

It's my pleasure to help Peter. I can certainly empathize with your frustration. I've been in the same boat -- and somehow it seemed like it was sinking. :-)

I have a brand new watch: Tag Heuer aquaracer automatic calibere 5 model WAN2110 and the date is not advancing (as it should every 24 hours). Any reason why?

You are actually supposed to be using a special case opener for this type of watch, however, if you want to open it, always remember, righty tighty, lefty loosy!
I am pretty sure those watches are water proof up to 3 ATM, so once you open that watch, just know, if you don't get the back put on tight, it's going to leak.
Good luck, i know you can do it. Oh, and if you have ever had the watch in for service before, there are ALYWAYS **** watchmakers who like to over tighten the watch cases. My husband is a watchmaker, and we have seen this hundreds of times. :)

My tag heuer link automatic stopped working what could be wrong with it

Assuming the watch wont start when worn then its time to get a specialist watchmaker to investigate.A premier watch as you have will need regular servicing at 3-5 year intervals.try www.rolexrepairs.co.uk they will provide a free estimate and operate a fully insured postal service.

My tag heuer 2000 chronograph professional button hard to press

Yes it would seem unlikely that the dial would cause this problem. It is more likely to be the seal if the pusher seems hard to depress. Watches should be serviced every two to three years at which time pusher seals are usually replaced. Recommend you take it to a watchmaker for a service to maintain the watch properly.

Dont know how many time to wind it

until it begins to feel just slightly taunt,Do NOT over wind a wind-up wrist watch, if its a self winding you should just have to walk in it to wind it. here is a link to a pdf of your manual which has winding procedures, Good luck Jon click here
