Hi Tom Speer

I would be happy to assist you with your Photosmart 5520 printer. I understand you are seeing an improper shut down message and the carriage will not move. Although you may not be seeing a carriage jam message, you might find the following document helpful:

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Brother MFC-3220C. I need to change the printer cartridges but I cannot get the cartridges in the middle of the printer in order to access them--they seem stuck on the left. Help?

Turn off the power. Turn it back on again and listen to the sound of the carriage moving. When you hear it then pull the mains lead out the back. the carriage will now be unlocked and there should be no resistance to you pushing it into the centre of the machine. If it is jammed at the left end then its possible that one of the cartridge locking arms has popped up and is fouling the case. A bit of jiggery poo with a screwdriver should push it down while you try and pull the carriage to the centre.

Good luck.

The carriage did not move
up or down properly.

You need to remove covers, manually move the carriage in home position, manually rotate gears to put scanner in home position, clean gears, use wd40 to neutrallize grease, ink, dust on clutches and gears,...

or replace:
- PR lift shaft - Sheet feed unit
- Main Board ***'y
- Carriage lift sensor unit

Paper comes out blank even though the ink is full.

Hi

This happens when the ink dries up on the printhead or on the cartridges contacts. Turn off the printer and remove the cartridges, shake the cartridges and check whether the copper strips on cartridges are intact. If not then you'll need to replace them with new one.

If the strips are intact then try cleaning the cartridge copper contacts with a Q-tip dipped in alcohol. Also, clean the inside of carriage where cartridges touch the bottom of carriage. Let the cartridge and carriage dry, then plug in the printer and check.

Ink cartridge wont seat properly

If it is a re manufactured ink buy a new one. If it has the seal on the bottom take it off or something is in the cartridge carriage. Make sure you have the correct replacement for the printer.

I Have a HP2210 l in one that continually asks me to clear the print jam and press OK i d this and the printer carriages gets stuck at either end of the carriage and then the printer asks to clear the jam...

When I see this happen in the field or at the shop the printer is toast and not worth repair. These machines only last about 4 years and then develop a hardware or logic issue. Sorry, but that is my experience.

Carrige and paper jam at the same time

The paper jamming is the result of the carriage problem. The paper is starting to feed and then carriage problem -- so paper jams. Look in the optical cavity and see where the carriage is stopping. You can take off the platen glass ( about 3-6 screws) and see if you can remove or fix the hang up.
