Question about Acer Aspire 3000 Notebook

2 Answers

Black Screen Acer Extensa 3000, computer screen went black, can still see the desktop with a light. When I use an external monitor I don't get a picture unless I'm in Setup or in SafeMode. I kow it could possibly be the backlight for the laptop itself, but the backlight wouldn't stop me from getting a picture on an external monitor. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? Already checked the memory modules. This problem occured with my Acer Extensa 3000. For the very first time I tried to burn a DVD R+. I put it into the drive and started the burning program. That's all. System (XP pro) froze and nothig else was possible than turn the notebook off. Now, when I'm switching it on (no matter with internal or external power supply) the only effect is: power LED (switch) becomes green, the fan starts for a few seconds and then turns off. Normal switch off (hold power button for 4 secs) works fine. But nothing else... no beep... no display... no harddisk noise... just nothing!

The core of the problem is that NOTHING happens, no beep, no possibility to run hardware setup or to boot. Simply nothing but the possibility to turn the notebook off. No access to anything but the power button. No drivers and no piece of software.

Facing that, yesterday I tried to disconnect the CMOS battery, but I didn't (after loosenig about 30 screws) really find it. Additionally, there is no "J1" like in other Acer models to discharge the CMOS memory.

Finally let me say: I am an electronics engineer myself. So I know some more about such issues than the most normal users. But not a solution in this case.

I understand how smart you are.....however you first listed your external monitor issue then your "core" problem second. I don't believe I answered anything but the first issue (it was a separate paragraph). I don't pretend to understand much more than the basice, but with about 20 years experience with field sales persons and the laptop issues created by lack of corporate control (laptops were not priority because IT was stationed in mfg plants and the squeaky wheel.......)I have seen and experienced some pretty amazing things from some very intelligent people. Their thought process started way above the actual cause or the symtons and method of manifestation as a result. Therefore I must ask you what you will probably consider an insulting question! I have the feeling that you have tried many more fixes than you listed......I don't think a slam is necessary just because someone does not "read between the lines" (aka read your mind/have same thought process steps).
You have two problems!@!!

Have you considered that?

You introduced several "non native" items to your system....something you were copying and a CD DVD (new/used/preformatted/ formatted where;) how are your safety/security programs setup......what do they check....when do they check....or do you use something like Zone Alarm where it is possible to unintentioally allow/give permission to potentially dangerous events?

Your power/no response has similar characteristics to a problem is a common acer probler...I am sure you found that in your research....your external monitor problem is the result of not drilling down for a few ideas on acer or it's sites.

Your "won't work now" sounds pretty simple to a simple person like me.....an acer protection is kicking you back off because.....what...only you would know. Do you remember the boot virus from several years ago that was particularly troublesome....same symptons wasn't it?

Let me give you a dummy drill....remove your hard drive ....then with a windows installation disk or your choice of bootables.......turn your laptop on and see if it stays on....hmmm!

If I could rate problem submission quality based on the sumbitters assessment of their own intelligence ... and.....given your electronics expertise I would have to rate yours as inapproprite.......espcially of I used the same criteria for rating as you apparently use......Touche'.

p.s. I have three acer laptops of varing ages and configurations......did finally figure out slingbox directly from feed so I could watch things like NASCAR and drink beer outside while preparing food that all rednecks love.....how are you doing with dart N on older equip......I also finally figured out how to use my macbook pro...it's almost as simple as ny Mac Mini (no matter what they say you can uograde things like memory yourself) ....it did take me a little longer to get "airport Extreme" and "Airport Express" to work the way I wanted with my Bose system, and Ipod boombox-wirelessly. .what did Forest Gump say......."stupid is as stupid does".

Give me a break, please!!! Even if youhad all the clearances I I would not share the basis for my technical/hands on experiences that are the basis for some of my solutions. So you are stuck with my simplistic response....oops....sorry ...my inappropriate response.

Have a great day and good luck.

I will have to look at my Acer for verification, but I am pretty sure that even though you use the keyboard to switch to an external display that there is also a recognition/enable-disable setting that has to be set appropriately. Try control panel/settings then open display folder...you should find what I am referencing in one of the submenus on the main selections.....it may be in the settings/appearance - advanced tab. I apologize for the ambguity but I don't have my Acer with me.

As far as the DVD goes I expect someone else will know much more than myself, but if the issues are limited to those you described, my novice approach would be one of elimination for the most basic items; such as driver reinstall; hardware removal thru control panel then restart recognition and reinstall; device manager review for changes; and as a last resort even removing the cd/dvd drive from your boot sequence.

Good luck. Hopefully you will get some more input also.

No signal for acer monitor....black screen all the day....

Right click on desktop -> select screen resolution. Select identify. If external monitor is number 2, select monitor number 1 (laptops monitor) and from dropdown menu select "extend these displays" or "duplicate these displays". Select apply, picture should be shown on both screens.

Lenovo 3000 n200 0769AMU press power on switch green light on after about 1 sec screen still black no HD light fan running

Welcome to Fixya

Try to drain the electrostatic charge of the motherboard that usually cause this issue. I wrote a tip on how to do the power drain. Try to plug in external monitor on the VGA port and see if you are getting display using external monitor. If you are getting display using external monitor then the problem would be the laptop LCD. If you are getting the same black screen using external monitor then the problem is already the motherboard.

Thank you for using Fixya!

If you have another monitor you can hook that up to the blue connector( VGA) This is usually on the side or on the back. If you get a picture then your internal video might be bad.

The screen on my acer extensa 5420 went black how can I trouble shoot to see what it is?

Good day sir/maam, when your LCD becomes black, the backlight of the LCD screen just went bad. this is caused by the failure of the inverter circuit board and/or lamp, at this point you don't have much choice but to bring it to your dealer for possible inverter replacement, at the moment if you want to see your display, you can plug in an external monitor temporarily. you can activate it by pressing Fn + (locate on your keyboard a picture of a monitor with the same color as your Fn key). hope this helps.

Did you switch displays to the external video? Try hitting the Fn key and whichever function key at the top of the keyboard has a little TV screen icon over it at the same time.

Black Screen

If you have a picture on your desktop and nothing on your external,With external screen plugged in check the output set up on display properties, may need to be set up again.
Once the screens are identified you should be able to save these settings and remember to set the correct screen size or you may experience Black screen syndrome were your video picture should be displayed,if in doubt start at the smallest (800x600) and work from there adjusting to suit the individual requirements.

Don't for get to save before reboot then test,

Black screen on Acer 5100, but will work with external monitor

It sounds like the control board or cable for the LCD may be damaged. If you're still under warranty, you'll need to send it back to Acer to be repaired.
